If you only do one road trip in Rwanda, make it Lake Kivu. The drive west from Kigali to the shores of this vast lake — shared with the Democratic Republic of Congo — passes through some of the most dramatic highland scenery in Central Africa. Tea plantations cascade down volcanic hillsides, the air smells of eucalyptus, and on a clear day the lake appears below you like polished pewter. Kigali to Rubavu (Gisenyi) — The Northern Route
The most popular Lake Kivu drive is Kigali to Rubavu via RN4. Distance: approximately 160 km. Drive time: 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours. The road passes through Musanze town before descending dramatically to the northern shore of Lake Kivu, arriving in Rubavu (formerly Gisenyi), a relaxed lakeside town with beach clubs, fish restaurants, and views across to Goma in the DRC.
This route is very well maintained — the RN4 is one of Rwanda's showcase highways — and comfortable in any rental vehicle, including an economy sedan. That said, the mountain sections involve steep grades and tight corners: automatic transmission makes life considerably easier.
Kigali to Karongi (Kibuye) — The Central Shore
Karongi sits at the midpoint of the lake and is reached via RN5 from Kigali — approximately 130 km, 2 hours. The scenery is arguably even more dramatic than the northern route, as the road hugs a ridge with lake views opening up repeatedly. Karongi is quieter than Rubavu and a favourite with visitors who want to swim, kayak, or visit Napoleon Island (a bat colony of extraordinary scale).
Kigali to Rusizi (Cyangugu) — The Southern Route
Rusizi in the far southwest is a 230 km drive from Kigali, about 4 hours. Most travellers combine this with Nyungwe Forest car hire into a multi-day loop — Kigali, Nyungwe (chimpanzee tracking), Rusizi, north along the lake to Karongi and Rubavu, then back to Kigali. This is Rwanda's classic self-drive circuit and takes 5–7 days comfortably.
Best Vehicle for the Lake Kivu Road Trip
The main tarmac road to Lake Kivu is excellent and a RAV4 or even an economy sedan handles it without issue. If you are incorporating Nyungwe Forest — where roads into the forest can be steep and rough — upgrade to a proper 4x4 such as the RAV4 ($45/day) or Prado.
