Elephants at the Foot of Kilimanjaro
Ernest Hemingway wrote about "the Snows of Kilimanjaro" — but the view that stays with most visitors to Amboseli is not the mountain in isolation. It is the elephants. Amboseli National Park sits at the foot of Kilimanjaro on the Kenya–Tanzania border, and its open, dry basin offers unobstructed views of vast elephant herds moving across cracked mud flats with the ice-capped volcano filling the entire sky behind them. It is the iconic image of African wildlife — and it is real, and it is there.
Amboseli's elephants are among the most studied in the world. The Amboseli Elephant Research Project has followed individual animals and families since 1972, identifying over a thousand individuals by their ear notches and tusk shapes. These elephants are relaxed around vehicles and allow very close approaches — making Amboseli the best park in East Africa for elephant photography.
The Swamp Springs
Underground water from Kilimanjaro's glaciers feeds a series of springs in the centre of the park, creating green swamps and marshes in an otherwise dry landscape. These springs attract lion, buffalo, hippo, and over 600 bird species including the rare black crake and African fish eagle. Observation Hill gives a panoramic view over the entire park and the swamp from above.
