The Roof of Africa
Kilimanjaro rises impossibly from the flat Tanzanian plain — a dormant stratovolcano that pushes 5,895 metres into the sky and wears a glacier on its summit even on the equator. It is the world's highest free-standing mountain and Africa's highest peak, yet it is walkable: no technical climbing equipment required, no ropes or crampons for the standard routes. This combination of accessibility and altitude has made it the world's most climbed high mountain.
The mountain passes through seven distinct vegetation zones on the ascent — from Moshi's dusty farmland through montane forest draped in old man's beard lichen, into the cloud zone with its giant heather and lobelia, across the moorland plateau, into the alpine desert of scree and ice, and finally to the crater rim at Uhuru Peak where the glacier gleams in the thin air. Each zone is a different world.
The Seven Zones
1. Cultivation (800–1,800m)
Coffee and banana farms, Chagga villages on the lower slopes.
2. Forest (1,800–2,800m)
Dense montane rainforest, colobus monkeys, buffalo, giant ferns.
3. Heath & Moorland (2,800–4,000m)
Giant heather, lobelia, everlasting flowers. Classic Kilimanjaro vistas.
4. Alpine Desert (4,000–5,000m)
Sparse vegetation, cold nights, the famous "lunar landscape."
5. Arctic Zone (5,000–5,895m)
Ice, glacier, crater rim. Uhuru Peak — the summit of Africa.
