Where the Nile Becomes a Cannon
The Victoria Nile — which has travelled from Lake Victoria across Uganda collecting water from a hundred tributaries — arrives at a narrow cleft in the Rift Valley escarpment and is forced, all of it, through a gap just 7 metres wide. The result is Murchison Falls: a detonation of white water that drops 43 metres and sends spray into the sky. Stand at the top and the ground shakes beneath your feet. Churchill called it "the most wonderful waterfall in the world."
Below the falls, the river widens into a papyrus-fringed channel teeming with life. The north bank of Murchison Falls National Park is classic East African savannah — lions hunt buffalo across open grasslands, Rothschild giraffes (one of the world's rarest subspecies) browse the acacia canopy, elephants wade at the riverbank, and the famous Nile crocodiles — some over 5 metres long — slide silently into the water as you pass.
The Nile Boat Safari
The three-hour launch trip from Paraa ferry to the base of the falls is unmissable. The channel banks are so dense with hippos, crocodiles, and waterbirds that the boat moves slowly through them. At the falls themselves, mist drifts across the water and shoebill storks stand motionless in the papyrus. It is one of the best boat safaris in Africa.
Kigali Car Rental to Murchison Falls
At 680 km, this is the longest Uganda destination from Kigali — but it is worth every kilometre. Our Kigali car rental service provides a Land Cruiser V8 with driver, Uganda cross-border permit, and an itinerary that typically pairs Murchison with Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary (for white rhinos) en route. Allocate at least 3 nights in the park to experience both the north bank game drives and the Nile boat safari.
