Lake Kivu is one of Africa's Great Rift Valley lakes and one of Rwanda's most popular tourist destinations. Stretching 90 kilometres along Rwanda's western border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lake Kivu offers stunning scenery, beach resorts, watersports, and a relaxed holiday atmosphere that contrasts beautifully with Kigali's urban energy.
The lake is flanked by three main Rwandan towns: Rubavu (Gisenyi) in the north, Karongi (Kibuye) in the centre, and Rusizi (Cyangugu) in the south. Each offers a distinct experience and all are accessible by well-maintained tarmac roads from Kigali, making Lake Kivu one of the best self-drive destinations in Rwanda.
Gisenyi, now officially called Rubavu, is the most popular Lake Kivu destination for visitors from Kigali. Located 160km northwest of Kigali via the RN4 highway, Gisenyi is a 2.5 to 3-hour drive through spectacular mountain scenery. The town sits at the northern end of Lake Kivu, directly adjacent to Goma (DRC), and offers white sand beaches, lakeside bars, and a lively weekend atmosphere.
Car hire to Gisenyi starts from $35/day for a Toyota Corolla self-drive, or $45/day for a Toyota RAV4. No 4x4 is needed for the main highway route.
Karongi (Kibuye) is widely regarded as the most picturesque town on Lake Kivu. Set among dramatic cliffs and peninsulas, the town offers island boat trips, excellent guesthouses, and a slower pace perfect for a weekend escape. The drive from Kigali to Kibuye via RN2 takes approximately 3.5 hours and goes through Muhanga and Ngororero before descending to the lake.
Rusizi (formerly Cyangugu) sits at the southern tip of Lake Kivu, 220km from Kigali (4.5 hours via RN1). It is the natural endpoint of a Rwanda west circuit that combines Nyungwe Forest chimpanzee trekking with a Lake Kivu beach stay. Car hire packages combining Nyungwe Forest and Lake Kivu Rusizi are available — ask via WhatsApp for multi-day rates.
Our multi-day car hire rates offer significant savings — a 4-day rental starts from $160 total for a self-drive RAV4, fully insured with unlimited mileage.
