Rwanda's ancient highland rainforest — home to chimpanzees, 13 primate species, and Africa's longest canopy walkway. Car hire from Kigali to Nyungwe National Park from $75/day. Mountain-capable vehicles and expert drivers.
Nyungwe is one of Africa's most biodiverse montane forests. Activities require advance booking through RDB — our drivers help coordinate timing.
Track habituated chimpanzee groups in their natural rainforest habitat. Trek departs 05:00 AM from Uwinka or Cyamudongo sector. Permit required ($100/person from RDB).
Walk Africa's longest canopy walkway — 160 metres suspended above the forest floor at 50m height. Stunning views of the Albertine Rift. One of Rwanda's most unique experiences.
Track the Ruwenzori black-and-white colobus — groups of 300+ are one of the largest colobus aggregations in Africa. Easier than chimpanzee trekking and permits cost less.
Nyungwe has 310 bird species including 29 Albertine Rift endemics. The park is considered one of Africa's premier birdwatching destinations. Early morning drives yield the best sightings.
Important: Nyungwe sits at over 1,600m altitude with steep mountain road approaches. A vehicle with strong engine, good brakes, and ideally 4x4 capability is strongly recommended. The RN1 descent into the park includes switchbacks. Our drivers know this road well.
Overnight in Kigali then depart 04:30–05:00 AM to reach Nyungwe in time for morning chimp trek briefing.
Straight south on the RN1 through Kicukiro, Muhanga, Nyanza to Huye (Butare). Rwanda's main southern highway — fast and well-paved.
Huye is Rwanda's academic city. Stop for fuel and breakfast. Don't miss the excellent National Museum of Rwanda if time permits (1 hr stop).
The road climbs steeply into the mountains. Spectacular views of the Albertine Rift begin here. Engine power and good brakes essential on the switchbacks.
Arrive at Uwinka, the main Nyungwe park facility at 2,480m altitude. Chimp trek briefings, canopy walk access, and accommodation all here.
The steep mountain approach to Nyungwe and forest access tracks require vehicles with strong engines, reliable brakes, and good ground clearance.
The V8 engine handles Nyungwe's mountain grades with ease. Powerful, reliable, and spacious. Best choice for groups who want maximum comfort and capability on this long drive.
Excellent power-to-weight ratio for mountain driving. The Hilux handles the Nyungwe forest tracks and steep grades very well. Good boot space for overnight camping gear.
The minimum we recommend for Nyungwe — AWD helps on the mountain grades. Adequate for the highway and park road, but the V8 or Hilux are preferred for forest tracks.
Nyungwe Forest National Park is one of Africa's oldest and most biodiverse montane rainforests, covering 1,019 square kilometres of the Albertine Rift highlands in southwest Rwanda. The park is home to 13 primate species, 310 bird species, and over 1,000 plant species — making it one of the most important forest ecosystems in Central Africa.
For visitors driving from Kigali, the journey to Nyungwe is a magnificent road trip through Rwanda's beautiful southern highlands. The route via the RN1 south passes through Huye (Butare) — Rwanda's university city — and climbs dramatically through tea estates and mountain ridges before descending into the forest.
Unlike Lake Kivu (which can be reached in a standard car), Nyungwe Forest requires a vehicle capable of handling sustained steep gradients. The RN1 includes a famous mountain descent approaching the park that challenges standard vehicles — overheating brakes and engine strain are real risks in low-clearance cars. The forest access tracks inside the park are unpaved and become extremely slippery in Rwanda's heavy rainfall seasons.
We strongly recommend the Toyota Land Cruiser V8 or Hilux 4x4 for Nyungwe. Both can handle the mountain passes easily and negotiate the forest tracks with no risk.
Given the 5-hour drive and 05:00 AM chimp trek start time, the vast majority of visitors choose to stay overnight near the park. Top accommodation options include One&Only Nyungwe House (luxury), Nyungwe Forest Lodge (mid-range), and RDB Campsite at Uwinka (budget). We offer multi-day car hire packages from $75/day for 3+ day rentals.
This 5-day circuit covers Rwanda's best southwest destinations and is fully serviced by our multi-day car hire packages. WhatsApp us for a custom quote.
