We collect you from your hotel, Kigali International Airport (KGL), or our office on KN 4 Ave.
90km of smooth tarmac highway through Rulindo and Gakenke districts. Beautiful tea plantation scenery.
30-minute stop in Musanze (formerly Ruhengeri) town for breakfast. Your driver knows the best local spots.
From Musanze it's a further 14km to Kinigi, the main entrance. This stretch needs 4x4 ground clearance.
Your driver waits at the park while you trek. Return journey departs after trekking, arriving Kigali by evening.
These 4x4 vehicles are specifically recommended for the road to Volcanoes National Park and the mountain tracks at Kinigi.
The ultimate gorilla trekking vehicle. Powerful V8 engine, exceptional ground clearance, and space for all your gear. The park's preferred vehicle for mountain routes.
Slightly more compact than the V8 but equally capable on mountain terrain. Comfortable for a full day trekking trip from Kigali to Volcanoes and back.
Good for the highway to Musanze but we recommend hiring a driver for the Kinigi mountain tracks. AWD capability handles Rwanda's upcountry roads well.
A gorilla trekking permit costs $1,500 per person and must be booked through the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) in advance. Your driver will coordinate timing around your permit.
Volcanoes National Park is accessible year-round. The dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer easier trekking. Our vehicles handle the wet season too — Land Cruisers are built for it.
Hiking boots, waterproof jacket, long trousers, and gloves. Our vehicles have ample boot space for all your trekking gear, camera equipment, and day bags.
Our English-speaking drivers know the Kinigi mountain tracks, help with park formalities, wait during your trek, and bring local knowledge of the Virunga region. Highly recommended over self-drive for first-timers.
For the most comfortable gorilla trekking experience, stay overnight in Musanze the night before. We offer multi-day car hire rates and can arrange early morning pickups from any lodge.
All our vehicles include comprehensive insurance. We do a full vehicle check before every trip. 24/7 roadside assistance is available anywhere on the route to Volcanoes National Park.
Volcanoes National Park (Parc National des Volcans) is Rwanda's most famous wildlife destination and home to the endangered mountain gorillas made famous by Dian Fossey. Located in the Virunga Mountains in northwest Rwanda, the park borders the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, forming part of the greater Virunga Conservation Area.
For visitors flying into Kigali International Airport (KGL), car hire is the best way to reach Volcanoes National Park. The journey covers approximately 120km via the RN2 highway, passing through Rulindo, Gakenke, and Musanze (formerly known as Ruhengeri).
While the main Kigali-Musanze road is excellent tarmac, the approach to Kinigi — the gateway community to Volcanoes National Park — requires a vehicle with proper ground clearance. The roads around the park buffer zone and the tracks used by rangers and trekking groups are unpaved and can be deeply rutted during rainy season (March–May and October–November).
Our Toyota Land Cruiser V8 and Prado TXL are the vehicles of choice for gorilla trekking. Both are equipped with full-time four-wheel drive, superior ground clearance, and the power to handle any terrain in the Virunga foothills.
All prices include comprehensive insurance, unlimited mileage, and free delivery anywhere in Kigali including Kigali International Airport.
Visitors arriving at Kigali International Airport (KGL, also called RDB Airport) can arrange direct car hire to Volcanoes National Park with us. We meet you in the arrivals hall and drive you directly to your Musanze lodge or straight to the Kinigi gate for an early trekking start. The airport-to-Volcanoes transfer takes approximately 3 hours.
Already based in Musanze? We also offer car hire from Musanze for the short transfer to Kinigi gate. Contact us via WhatsApp for same-day vehicle availability in Musanze (Ruhengeri) for gorilla trekking logistics.
Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park requires an RDB permit ($1,500 per person in 2025) and a park briefing starting at 07:00 AM at Kinigi. We recommend departing Kigali by 04:30–05:00 AM for an early permit start. Our drivers are experienced with this itinerary and know exactly when to depart to ensure you arrive on time.
For multi-day gorilla trekking itineraries, we offer full multi-day car hire packages covering Volcanoes National Park and other destinations including Akagera National Park, Lake Kivu, or Nyungwe Forest. Ask us for a custom quote via WhatsApp.
