Rwanda's only Big Five safari park. Hire a 4x4 from Kigali for game drives in Akagera — lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalo, and leopards await. Expert safari drivers available.
Rwanda's Big Five park. Akagera is the only park in Rwanda with lions, black rhinos, and elephants. Over 500 bird species too.
The drive east from Kigali to Akagera is one of Rwanda's most scenic — rolling hills, tea plantations, and open savanna as you approach the park.
We collect you from your hotel, Kigali Airport, or our KN 4 Ave office. Early morning departure recommended for best game viewing.
Drive east on Rwanda's main highway through Kicukiro to Rwamagana. Smooth tarmac road, approx 60km.
Continue on RN3 through Kayonza district — the gateway to Eastern Province and Akagera. Flat terrain, fast driving.
Turn north from Kayonza. The road to the main park gate (Southern Entrance) is well-marked. Total ~100km from Kigali.
Inside the park, tracks are unpaved — full-time 4x4 is essential. Morning and afternoon game drives both available.
High roof, large windows — optimal for spotting and photographing wildlife. The most comfortable vehicle for a full-day game drive in Akagera.
Excellent ground clearance for Akagera's rough game tracks. Perfect for couples or a small group wanting a rugged safari experience at great value.
Self-drive is permitted in Akagera. The Prado TXL handles the park's game drive tracks confidently. Great for visitors who prefer independence inside the park.
Akagera entry fees are set by RDB (Rwanda Development Board). Non-resident adults pay $40/day per person. A vehicle entry fee also applies. Check current rates at rdb.rw.
Morning (06:00–10:00 AM) and late afternoon (15:00–18:00) are best for wildlife sightings. We recommend an overnight stay at one of Akagera's lodges to catch both sessions.
Self-drive is allowed in Akagera — it is a fenced, well-mapped park with GPS tracks available. We recommend downloading the Akagera offline map before entering. A full-time 4x4 is required.
Staying overnight dramatically improves your Big Five chances. Akagera Game Lodge and Ruzizi Tented Lodge are the main options inside the park. We offer multi-day car hire for overnight stays.
Don't miss the boat safari on Lake Ihema — hippos, crocodiles, and hundreds of bird species. Our drivers can coordinate boat timing with your game drive schedule.
All vehicles include comprehensive insurance. 24/7 roadside support anywhere in Eastern Province. Our drivers carry emergency contacts for the park's management team.
Akagera National Park is Rwanda's largest national park and home to the country's only Big Five wildlife. Spanning 1,122 square kilometres along the Tanzania border in Eastern Province, Akagera features classic savanna, woodlands, wetlands, and the beautiful Lake Ihema — making it one of Central Africa's most diverse safari ecosystems.
For travellers flying into Kigali International Airport (KGL), a safari car hire to Akagera National Park is one of the most popular day trips and weekend excursions from the capital. The park is easily accessible via the RN3 highway, and a self-drive or chauffeur-driven 4x4 from Rent Cars Kigali is the most flexible and comfortable way to explore the park at your own pace.
Unlike many East African national parks where self-drive is restricted, Akagera fully permits private 4x4 vehicles to self-drive the game drive circuits. The park provides a well-maintained map and GPS tracks are widely shared. This makes Akagera an excellent destination for visitors who want the freedom to linger at a waterhole or explore the northern lion territory at their own pace.
The game tracks inside Akagera are unpaved and range from smooth murram roads to rocky, deeply corrugated sections in the north. A 4x4 with good ground clearance is essential — do not attempt Akagera in a standard sedan or minivan.
Many visitors arriving at Kigali International Airport choose to visit Akagera on the way to or from the airport, as the park lies east of Kigali in the direction of the airport approach. We offer direct airport-to-Akagera transfers with same-day availability and free vehicle delivery at KGL arrivals.
Park entry fees are managed by African Parks and the Rwanda Development Board (RDB). Non-resident adult entry is currently $40/person/day, with additional vehicle entry fees. All wildlife photography and camping fees are separate. Contact us via WhatsApp and we can help coordinate your full Akagera visit including permit logistics.
