The road from Kigali to Musanze is the single most-driven route by tourists in Rwanda. It is the gateway to Volcanoes National Park and the mountain gorillas — the experience that brings most international visitors to the country in the first place. Distance and Drive Time
The distance from central Kigali to Musanze town centre is approximately 112 kilometres. Under normal conditions, this takes about 2 hours to 2 hours 30 minutes in a rental car. The road (National Route RN2) is paved and well-maintained for the majority of the route — it is one of Rwanda's best intercity roads. However, the final stretch from Musanze town into the Volcanoes National Park headquarters at Kinigi adds another 15–20 minutes and involves narrower, hillier roads.
Road Conditions in 2026
The RN2 between Kigali and Musanze is in excellent condition. It climbs significantly as you leave Kigali's rolling hills and enter the volcanic highland zone around Musanze — you will notice the temperature dropping noticeably as you gain altitude. The road from Musanze to Kinigi (park gate) is partially unpaved and can become muddy during the rainy season (March–May and October–November). This is why a proper 4x4 rental vehicle is strongly recommended for gorilla trekking trips.
Best Vehicle for This Route
- Toyota RAV4 ($35–$50/day): Handles this route confidently year-round. Recommended for most travellers.
- Land Cruiser V8 ($110/day): Ideal if you are in the rainy season or doing a multi-park itinerary that also includes Akagera. The V8's high clearance and diesel torque shine on the Kinigi approach road.
- Economy Sedan: Workable on RN2 itself but not recommended for the Kinigi section.
Fuel Stops on the Kigali–Musanze Route
You will pass through several towns with fuel stations:
- Kigali: Fill up before you leave. Multiple Total, Rubis, and Engen stations near KN 4 Ave.
- Ruhengeri / Musanze town: Multiple stations in town — fill up here before heading to Kinigi as there are no stations at the park gate.

What to See Along the Way
The Kigali–Musanze road passes through some of Rwanda's most visually dramatic landscapes. After leaving Kigali you enter the green hills of Rulindo district, the road climbing through tea plantations and terraced hillsides. By the time you approach Musanze you can see the Virunga volcano peaks — Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura — on a clear morning. Allow yourself time to stop and photograph: these views are extraordinary.
Departure Time Recommendations
Gorilla trekking briefings at Volcanoes National Park start at 7:00 AM sharp at the park offices in Kinigi. This means you need to leave Kigali no later than 4:30 AM if you are self-driving without a driver who knows the road. Most experienced travellers prefer to stay overnight in Musanze the night before — there are excellent lodges from $40/night near the park gate.
Alternatively, if you add a chauffeur to your rental for $20/day, your driver will handle the early-morning dark roads with confidence while you rest.
Driving Tips for This Route
- Speed cameras and police checkpoints are common on RN2 — observe the posted speed limits (60 km/h in populated areas, 80 km/h on open road).
- There is significant motorcycle (boda boda) and pedestrian traffic through Musanze town. Slow right down.
- On the Kinigi road, watch for school children walking in the early morning — the road is narrow with no footpaths in places.
