Rwanda 7-Day Itinerary — The Complete Self-Drive Road Trip Plan
Seven days is the sweet spot for Rwanda. Long enough to reach the country's greatest highlights — gorilla trekking, Akagera safari, Lake Kivu, and Kigali city — without feeling rushed. Short enough that you can fly in, pack it all in, and fly out feeling thoroughly satisfied. Here is the day-by-day plan that our most experienced self-drive clients use.
Vehicle Recommendation for This Itinerary
This 7-day route combines city driving, mountain highways, and national park roads. A Toyota RAV4 from $35–$50/day handles it all comfortably in dry season. In wet season (March–May, October–November), upgrade to a Land Cruiser V8 or Prado for the Akagera game tracks. Add a professional driver for $20/day if you want to fully relax on the long driving days.
Day 1 — Arrive Kigali, City Orientation
Collect your rental car from Kigali International Airport — free delivery included. Drive to your hotel (15–20 minutes). Spend the afternoon exploring Kigali: the Kigali Genocide Memorial for historical context, Inema Arts Centre for Rwandan contemporary art, and dinner at a rooftop restaurant in Nyarugenge. Kigali is a safe, walkable city for your first evening.
Day 2 — Kigali to Musanze, Volcanoes NP Prep
Early morning departure (before 9 AM to avoid traffic). Take the RN2 northwest — a beautiful 2-hour drive through green highland scenery. Arrive in Musanze by late morning. Afternoon: visit the Musanze Caves (dramatically lit underground caves, 45-minute tour), or hike the base of Mount Bisoke. Stay overnight in Musanze — this is essential before your 7:00 AM park briefing.

Day 3 — Gorilla Trekking, Volcanoes National Park
This is the day. Wake at 5:30 AM, drive 20 minutes to park HQ in Kinigi. 7:00 AM briefing. Trek into the Virunga forest with your ranger group. The trek can last 2–8 hours — pace yourself. The hour with the gorilla family passes in what feels like minutes. Return to Musanze or begin driving south towards Lake Kivu. Many visitors choose to drive west to Rubavu (Lake Kivu north shore, 1.5 hours from Musanze) on this afternoon.
Day 4 — Lake Kivu, Rubavu (Gisenyi)
Base yourself at Lake Kivu for a full day of rest and recovery from the gorilla trek. Swim in the lake at one of the beach clubs, take a boat trip to a lake island, or simply eat fresh grilled tilapia by the water and watch the DRC mountains across the border. Day 5 — Drive Lake Kivu South to Karongi, or Return to Kigali via Scenic Route
Option A: Drive south along the lake shore from Rubavu to Karongi (2–3 hours, extremely scenic). Afternoon: take a boat to Napoleon Island at dusk for the spectacular bat emergence — one million bats in the evening sky.
Option B: Return to Kigali via the mountain route (3 hours) for a Kigali evening. Driving today: 120–160 km.
Day 6 — Akagera National Park Safari
Depart Kigali early (6 AM) to reach Akagera for the morning game drive. The drive is 1.5–2 hours east on the RN3. Enter at the south Kayonza gate. Spend the day on game drives — the lake circuit in the morning for hippos and waterbirds, the northern sector in mid-morning for lions and rhinos. Pack lunch as the park restaurants are limited. Day 7 — Final Kigali Morning, Airport
Use the final morning for any missed Kigali highlights — Nyamirambo neighbourhood walk, Kimironko market for souvenirs, or just a great breakfast at one of the city's best cafes. Return your rental car to the airport (Rent Cars Kigali collects free at KGL) and depart.
