How to Plan a Rwanda Trip -- Step by Step
Rwanda trip planning has a specific logic -- do things in the wrong order and you end up with permits but no accommodation, or accommodation but no transport. Here is the right sequence.
Step 1: Decide Your Dates and Length of Trip
Minimum recommended trip length: 5 days. Ideal: 7-10 days. Best months: June-September (peak, dry, requires most advance planning), December-February (good, drier, less busy), March-May (wet season -- manageable with 4x4, best value).
Step 2: Book Your Gorilla Permit FIRST
Everything else in Rwanda is bookable later. Gorilla permits are the constraint. Book at rdb.rw as soon as your dates are confirmed. $1,500 per person. Peak season: book 4-6 months ahead. Off-peak: 6-8 weeks ahead is usually fine. This is Step 2, not Step 5 -- the permit date becomes the fixed point around which everything else is organised.
Step 3: Book Your Car Rental
Once you have your gorilla permit date, book your rental car. This gives you airport delivery, the Musanze drive on the right day, and the freedom to build the rest of your itinerary freely. WhatsApp us at +250 788 362 035 with your permit date and arrival flight.
- For gorilla trekking only: Toyota RAV4 from $60/day
- For full Rwanda circuit: Land Cruiser or Prado from $110/day
- For a group of 6+: Minibus from $100/day
Step 4: Book Accommodation
In this order of urgency: (1) Musanze lodges near Volcanoes NP for gorilla trekking night, (2) Akagera lodge if doing safari, (3) Kigali hotel. Nyungwe and Lake Kivu can usually be booked later.
Step 5: Sort Your Visa and Health Requirements
- Check visa requirements at migration.gov.rw -- most nationalities visa-free. See our visa guide.
- Yellow fever certificate if required from your country. See our yellow fever guide.
- Consult a travel health clinic for vaccinations. See our vaccination guide.
- Travel insurance with medical evacuation cover.
Step 6: Book Flights
RwandAir is the national carrier with good connections. Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, and Emirates via Dubai are popular options. Kigali International Airport (KGL) is modern and efficient.
Step 7: Plan Your Day-by-Day Itinerary
Use your gorilla permit date as the fixed anchor. Build the rest of the trip around it. See our ready-made itineraries: 5-day guide or 7-day guide.
Step 8: Pack
