Rwanda Visa Requirements 2026: The Complete Guide
Rwanda has one of the most open visa policies in Africa. Since 2018, it has been visa-free for citizens of all African Union member states. And since expanding its visa-free list, most Western visitors can enter without pre-arranging anything. Here is exactly what applies to you.
Countries That Are Visa-Free for Rwanda
Citizens of the following (and many more) can enter Rwanda without a visa for up to 30–90 days:
- All African Union countries — visa-free on arrival
- United States, Canada — visa-free for tourism
- United Kingdom — visa-free for up to 90 days
- Germany, France, Netherlands, and most EU countries — visa-free
- Australia, New Zealand — visa-free for tourism
- Japan, South Korea — visa-free

Countries That Need a Visa
Some nationalities do still require a visa. If your country is not on the visa-free list, you can apply online at irembo.gov.rw before you travel. The Rwanda e-visa costs $50 and is processed within 3–5 business days. Single entry, 30 days.
Visa on Arrival
Rwanda also offers visa on arrival at Kigali International Airport for most nationalities that are not visa-free. Cost: $50 USD. You will need cash or card. However, applying online before travelling is faster, avoids any queue at immigration, and is the approach we recommend.
East African Tourist Visa (Best for Multi-Country Trips)
If you are visiting Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya in one trip, the East African Tourist Visa covers all three countries for $100 USD. Apply at any of the three countries' immigration portals. For car rental customers driving Kigali to Bwindi (Uganda), this is the visa to get.
What You Need at Immigration in Kigali
- Valid passport (minimum 6 months validity beyond your travel dates)
- Return or onward ticket
- Proof of accommodation (hotel booking)
- Visa confirmation (if applicable)

Length of Stay
Most visitors receive a 30-day stamp on arrival. Extensions can be arranged at the immigration office in Kigali (at Kimihurura) if needed.
