Rwanda Itinerary 5 Days — The Complete 2026 Guide

"Rwanda itinerary 5 days" is one of the most searched phrases by first-time visitors to Rwanda — and for good reason. Five days is the sweet spot: long enough to see mountain gorillas, Kigali, and Lake Kivu, short enough to fit into a tight travel schedule. This is the exact itinerary we recommend to our clients every week.

Everything below assumes you pick up your rental car in Kigali and return it five days later. We recommend a Toyota RAV4 or 4x4 for this route — it handles every road on this itinerary comfortably.

Day 1: Arrive Kigali — City Orientation

Drive: 0 km. Pick up your rental car at KIA airport or your hotel.

Land at Kigali International Airport. Your rental car is delivered free to arrivals — just book our airport delivery service with your flight number and we track your flight in real time.

  • Morning: Kigali Genocide Memorial (essential — opens 8 AM, allow 2 hours)
  • Afternoon: Kimironko Market for local crafts and fabric. Inema Arts Centre in Remera.
  • Evening: Dinner in Kigali — Karibu Restaurant or Heaven Restaurant near the Convention Centre.

Stay: Kigali — budget from $30/night, mid-range from $80/night.

Tonight: Fill your fuel tank. Stock up on water and snacks at Simba Supermarket in Remera. Set your alarm for 5:00 AM.

Day 2: Kigali ? Musanze ? Volcanoes National Park Area

Drive: 120 km north on RN2 highway — 2 hours. Depart by 7 AM.

The drive north to Musanze is one of Rwanda's most beautiful — rolling hills, tea plantations, and the first glimpse of the Virunga volcanoes on the horizon. The road is paved and excellent.

  • En route: Stop at the viewpoint above Rulindo for photos.
  • Afternoon: Lakes Burera and Ruhondo — twin volcanic lakes with the volcanoes behind. One of Rwanda's most photographed spots. 30 minutes from Musanze.
  • Evening: Early dinner and early bed. Tomorrow requires a 6:00 AM departure.

Stay: Musanze — Virunga Lodge (luxury), Mountain Gorilla View Lodge (mid), or La Palme Hotel (budget).

Need a car specifically for gorilla trekking? We can also arrange a professional driver for Day 3 so you sleep while someone else handles the 5 AM logistics.

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking — Volcanoes National Park

Depart lodge by 6:00 AM. Park HQ briefing at 7:00 AM sharp.

This is the day everything else is planned around. Your gorilla permit ($1,500/person from RDB) assigns you to one of 12 habituated gorilla families. Trekking time varies from 45 minutes to 6 hours depending on where the family is in the forest. You spend exactly one hour with the gorillas — the most extraordinary wildlife experience most visitors ever have.

  • Bring: 1.5 litres of water, energy snacks, rain jacket, sturdy walking shoes
  • Hire a porter at the base ($10–$15) — it supports the local community and genuinely helps on steep sections
  • Return to your lodge by early afternoon. Rest — you have earned it.

Afternoon: Optional golden monkey trek ($100/person) — a different, lighter experience in the same forest. Or simply recover at your lodge.

Day 4: Musanze ? Lake Kivu (Gisenyi/Rubavu)

Drive: 70 km west — approximately 1.5 hours. Depart after breakfast.

The drive from Musanze to Gisenyi is short but spectacular — you descend from the mountains to the lake shore. Lake Kivu's northern town of Rubavu (Gisenyi) has a beach strip, restaurants, and a completely different pace from the mountains.

  • Afternoon: Swim in Lake Kivu at the beach. Sunset boat tour if available from your lodge.
  • Evening: The lakefront restaurants in Rubavu serve fresh tilapia. Sit outside and watch the Congo hills on the other side of the lake turn red at dusk.

Stay: Rubavu (Gisenyi) — Serena Hotel Kivu (upscale), Kivu Sun Hotel (mid), or lakefront guesthouses from $30/night.

Travelling with a group of 6+? Our minibus hire service keeps everyone together on this route for $100/day.

Day 5: Lake Kivu ? Kigali — Return

Drive: 158 km southeast on RN2 — 2.5 hours. Depart by 10 AM for an afternoon flight.

Morning swim or kayak on the lake. Pick up any last crafts at the Rubavu market. Then drive back to Kigali at a comfortable pace.

  • Optional stop: Nyagatare viewpoint on the descent — great photos of the lake and hills.
  • Kigali arrival: Return your rental car to our office on KN 4 Ave or we collect from your hotel. No fees for hotel collection.
  • If your flight is evening, use the afternoon for any Kigali shopping you missed on Day 1.
