Rwanda Travel Tips 2026 — What Every First-Timer Needs to Know Before Renting a Car

Rwanda surprises almost every first-time visitor — usually for the better. The roads are cleaner, the cities more organised, and the landscapes more dramatic than many expect. But like any destination, it rewards preparation. These are the 15 most important things to know before you rent a car in Kigali and head out into this extraordinary country.

Rwanda road trip first timer car rental tips 2026

1. You Do Not Need a Visa in Advance (for Most Nationalities)

Most visitors to Rwanda can get a visa on arrival at Kigali Airport or enter visa-free (African Union passport holders). The East Africa Tourist Visa ($100) covers Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya and is excellent value if you are doing a regional trip. Check the RDB website for your specific nationality before you travel.

2. Get an MTN or Airtel Rwanda SIM at the Airport

Mobile data in Rwanda is fast, affordable, and works in most of the country including Kigali city, Musanze, and along all major highways. Buy an MTN or Airtel SIM from the kiosk in arrivals at KGL for a few thousand francs. A 1 GB data bundle costs approximately RWF 2,000 ($1.50). You will need data for Google Maps navigation.

3. Rwanda Drives on the Right

Rwanda switched from left-hand traffic to right-hand traffic in 2009. Road markings are clear and drivers have fully adapted. Most rental vehicles are right-hand drive (steering wheel on the left side of the car), matching the road. This can feel different for visitors from the UK, Australia, or southern African countries — factor in an adjustment period for your first hour of driving.

4. Speed Cameras Are Everywhere

Rwanda takes road safety seriously. Speed cameras are deployed on all major routes and police checkpoints are frequent. Fines are issued on the spot and are not negotiable. Stick to 60 km/h in towns and 80 km/h on open roads. This is one reason why a local driver who knows the camera locations is worth every cent of the $20/day chauffeur fee.

5. Plastic Bags Are Banned

Rwanda has a total ban on single-use plastic bags — one of the strictest environmental policies in the world. Do not bring plastic bags into the country and do not pack items in plastic bags for day trips. Cloth shopping bags are sold everywhere. This policy extends to national parks and all public spaces.

6. The Currency Is Rwandan Francs (RWF)

Hotels and car rental companies (including Rent Cars Kigali) price in USD for convenience, but everyday expenses — food at local restaurants, boda boda rides, market purchases — are in RWF. The exchange rate is approximately $1 = RWF 1,380 (check current rates before you travel). ATMs in Kigali (Visa and Mastercard accepted) dispense RWF. Keep cash for remote areas where cards may not work.

7. Fuel Is Paid in RWF — Know the Prices

Fuel stations in Rwanda are widespread on main routes. Petrol and diesel are priced per litre in RWF and rates are government-regulated, changing monthly. See our Rwanda fuel prices 2026 guide for current rates. Always fill up in a main town before entering a national park — there are no fuel stations inside Akagera, Volcanoes NP, or Nyungwe.

8. Google Maps Works Well (But Download Offline)

Google Maps is accurate for all major routes in Rwanda and works well on 4G in most of the country. Download offline maps for Rwanda (and specifically for each region you plan to visit) before leaving your accommodation each morning. The Nyungwe forest interior and some Akagera game tracks may have weak signal.

9. Book Gorilla Permits Months in Advance

Rwanda's gorilla permits cost $1,500 per person and are sold through the Rwanda Development Board. Peak season (June–September) permits sell out 6–12 months in advance. If you are planning to trek, book your car hire for gorilla trekking immediately after confirming your permit date.

10. Kigali Is One of Africa's Safest Cities

Rwanda consistently ranks as one of the safest countries in Africa for visitors. Petty crime exists but is low by regional standards. Violent crime targeting tourists is very rare. Drive confidently, park in designated areas, and follow normal urban common sense.

11. The Hills Are Real — Drive Accordingly

Rwanda's roads wind through genuinely steep terrain. Automatic transmission makes this far more manageable than manual, especially when stop-starting on uphill junctions. All vehicles in the Rent Cars Kigali fleet are automatic. Downhill braking on long descents — especially to Lake Kivu — requires engine braking and careful technique.

12. Roadside Assistance Is Available 24/7

Every Rent Cars Kigali rental comes with 24/7 roadside support. If you have a flat tyre in the middle of Akagera at 6 PM, call or WhatsApp +250 788 362 035 and we will get to you. This is one of the most important reasons to rent from a local company with real infrastructure.

13. Yellow Fever Vaccine Is Required

Rwanda requires proof of yellow fever vaccination on entry. Carry your yellow card (vaccination certificate) with your passport. Some travellers have been turned away at immigration without it — do not leave this to chance.

14. The Best Time to Visit Is June–September

Dry season from June to September offers the best wildlife viewing, most reliable roads, and clearest mountain views. This is also the most popular period — book car hire and accommodation well in advance. The shoulder months (December–February) are also excellent with fewer crowds.

15. WhatsApp Is How Rwanda Does Business

For booking your car rental, confirming hotel check-ins, or asking any local service provider a question, use WhatsApp. It is Rwanda's primary business communication platform. Rent Cars Kigali is available on WhatsApp at +250 788 362 035 around the clock.
