Kigali Airport Transfer Guide — Everything You Need When You Land
Kigali International Airport (KGL), officially named Gregoire Kayibanda International Airport, is a modern, efficient facility that makes arriving in Rwanda far more pleasant than many African airports. But it still helps to know what to expect — especially if you are collecting a rental car or arranging airport transfer.
What Happens When You Land at Kigali Airport
Immigration at KGL is efficient by regional standards. You will present your passport and either your pre-issued visa or get a visa on arrival (most nationalities). The visa-on-arrival process takes 5–20 minutes depending on queue length. Rwanda also operates an East Africa Tourist Visa for $100 that covers Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya — useful if you are doing a wider regional trip.
Baggage collection is straightforward and the terminal is clean, well-signed, and air-conditioned throughout. The arrivals hall exits directly to a parking area where vehicles wait.
The Options for Getting from KGL to Your Hotel
Option 1: Pre-Booked Rental Car with Free Delivery (Best)
When you book a car rental with Rent Cars Kigali, your vehicle is delivered free to the airport. Your driver (if you have booked chauffeur service) or our agent will be waiting in arrivals with your name on a sign. Walk out of arrivals, meet your driver, and go. No taxi negotiation, no app failures, no confusion. This is how smart Rwanda visitors start their trip.
If you are self-driving, the vehicle handover takes 10 minutes in the car park — we walk you around the vehicle, confirm the documentation, and you drive away. The drive from KGL to central Kigali is about 15–20 minutes on fast, well-maintained roads.
Option 2: Bolt (Uber equivalent)
Bolt operates reliably at Kigali Airport. A Bolt from KGL to central Kigali hotels costs approximately $5–$12 depending on destination and time of day. The app works well with a local MTN or Airtel SIM. This is a fine option for arriving travellers who do not have a car rental for Day 1.
Option 3: Taxi
Official taxis are available outside arrivals. Expect to negotiate — agree the fare before getting in. A metered or agreed taxi to the city centre should cost $10–$20. Avoid drivers who approach you inside the terminal.

Airport Facilities
