Distance and Drive Time from Kigali

The road from Kigali passes through Huye (Butare), Rwanda's intellectual capital, before climbing into the forest altitude zone.
Road Conditions to Nyungwe
The highway to Huye (RN1) is excellent — well-maintained, wide tarmac, and straightforward driving. The section from Huye to Nyungwe and beyond to the southern lakeshore gets more interesting: the road climbs steeply into tea plantation country, then enters the forest edge where it can be wet, narrow, and occasionally rough, especially after heavy rain. Nyungwe's most sought-after experience. Chimpanzees are habituated in two communities. Trekking follows a ranger-led forest walk of 2–6 hours depending on where the chimps have moved. Permits cost $150/person and must be booked through the Rwanda Development Board in advance.
Canopy Walk
One of only a handful of canopy walkways in East Africa, Nyungwe's suspended bridge puts you 50 metres above the forest floor with views across an ocean of treetops stretching to the Congo border. This is extraordinary — book it.
Colobus Monkey Trekking
The Angola colobus troops in Nyungwe are among the largest primate groups on Earth. Seeing 200–400 black-and-white colobus monkeys moving through the forest canopy is a wildlife spectacle unlike anything else in Rwanda.
Bird Watching
Nyungwe hosts 300+ bird species, including 29 Albertine Rift endemics. For serious birders, this is arguably Rwanda's top destination — even more rewarding than the more famous gorilla parks.
