Nyungwe Forest Car Hire — Rwanda's Most Remote Destination Guide 2026
Nyungwe Forest National Park is the wildest, most remote, and arguably most spectacular of Rwanda's national parks. Covering 1,019 square kilometres of ancient montane rainforest in the southwestern corner of Rwanda, it is home to 13 primate species including chimpanzees, L'Hoest's monkeys, and the spectacular Angola colobus — often seen in troops of 400 animals. Getting there requires planning, the right vehicle, and a genuine commitment to the drive. But visitors who make it consistently call Nyungwe one of their greatest Rwanda experiences.
Distance and Drive Time from Kigali
Nyungwe is approximately 225–250 km southwest of Kigali depending on the route. Drive time is 4.5–5 hours under normal conditions. This is not a day trip — you should plan at least 2 nights in or near the forest. The road from Kigali passes through Huye (Butare), Rwanda's intellectual capital, before climbing into the forest altitude zone.
Road Conditions to Nyungwe
The highway to Huye (RN1) is excellent — well-maintained, wide tarmac, and straightforward driving. The section from Huye to Nyungwe and beyond to the southern lakeshore gets more interesting: the road climbs steeply into tea plantation country, then enters the forest edge where it can be wet, narrow, and occasionally rough, especially after heavy rain. This is why 4x4 car hire from Kigali is strongly recommended for Nyungwe.
Best Vehicle for Nyungwe
- Toyota RAV4 ($35–$50/day): Adequate for the main road in dry season. Not recommended in heavy rain or for the rougher forest tracks.
- Land Cruiser V8 ($110/day): The definitive choice for Nyungwe. High clearance, diesel power for the climbs, and confidence on slippery tea-plantation roads in the mist.
- Prado: Also excellent — a good middle ground between the RAV4 and V8 on both capability and cost.
What to Do in Nyungwe
Chimpanzee Tracking
Nyungwe's most sought-after experience. Chimpanzees are habituated in two communities. Trekking follows a ranger-led forest walk of 2–6 hours depending on where the chimps have moved. Permits cost $150/person and must be booked through the Rwanda Development Board in advance.
Canopy Walk
One of only a handful of canopy walkways in East Africa, Nyungwe's suspended bridge puts you 50 metres above the forest floor with views across an ocean of treetops stretching to the Congo border. This is extraordinary — book it.
Colobus Monkey Trekking
The Angola colobus troops in Nyungwe are among the largest primate groups on Earth. Seeing 200–400 black-and-white colobus monkeys moving through the forest canopy is a wildlife spectacle unlike anything else in Rwanda.
Bird Watching
Nyungwe hosts 300+ bird species, including 29 Albertine Rift endemics. For serious birders, this is arguably Rwanda's top destination — even more rewarding than the more famous gorilla parks.
Combining Nyungwe with Lake Kivu
The classic Rwanda self-drive circuit is: Kigali ? Nyungwe ? Rusizi (Lake Kivu south) ? north along the Lake Kivu shore to Rubavu ? back to Kigali. This 6–8 day loop covers Rwanda's south and west and rewards you with the country's most dramatic scenery. Add Volcanoes National Park gorilla trekking as a start or end and you have the definitive Rwanda road trip.
