Kigali to Nyungwe Forest -- Complete 2026 Driving Guide
Nyungwe Forest National Park is Rwanda's most remote major destination -- 225 km south of Kigali through the country's most spectacular mountain scenery. The drive is long but genuinely extraordinary. Here is everything you need to plan it safely.
Distance and Drive Time
- Distance: 225 km via RN1 Southern Highway
- Drive time: 4.5 to 5.5 hours depending on stops and conditions
- Best departure: 5:00 AM from Kigali for morning activities in the park
- Road condition: Fully paved throughout. Mountain sections require careful driving.
The Route Step by Step
Kigali to Muhanga (Gitarama) -- 50 km, 45 minutes: Fast, flat highway south. Good fuel station in Muhanga -- top up here.
Muhanga to Huye (Butare) -- 90 km, 90 minutes: Road climbs steadily into the southern highlands. Pass through Kamonyi and Ruhango. Huye is the last major town before the forest -- stock up on food and water here.
Huye to Nyungwe Park Gate -- 85 km, 90 minutes: The road climbs steeply into the forest, reaching over 2,000 metres. Tight switchbacks, mist in the mornings, breathtaking views to the left across valleys. Drive slowly on this section. The park gate appears as the road levels out inside the forest canopy.
Fuel and Supplies
- Muhanga: Total fuel station. Good stop if you did not fill in Kigali.
- Huye (Butare): Last reliable fuel before the park. Multiple stations. Also stock water and food here -- limited options inside the park.
Mountain Road Warnings
- The final 85 km climbs from 1,600m to 2,200m with tight bends -- do not rush
- Morning mist dramatically reduces visibility on the mountain section -- headlights on
- During rainy season (March-May, Oct-Nov) some sections get slippery -- 4x4 strongly recommended
- Overtaking on blind corners causes accidents -- do not do it regardless of how slow the truck ahead is moving
What Vehicle Do You Need?
- Dry season main road only: RAV4 or similar SUV is fine
- Wet season or accessing forest trailheads: Land Cruiser or Prado recommended
- Sedan: not recommended for this drive -- the mountain gradient is demanding on small engines
