Kigali to Akagera National Park -- The Complete 2026 Driving Guide
Akagera National Park sits on Rwanda's eastern border with Tanzania -- a sweeping savannah of lakes, wetlands, and game-rich grasslands. It is home to lions, elephants, giraffes, hippos, and over 500 bird species. The drive from Kigali is one of Rwanda's most straightforward -- good tarmac, clear signage, and a landscape that shifts dramatically from the city's hills to the flat eastern plains.
Distance and Drive Time
- Distance: 112 km from Kigali city centre to Akagera South Gate (main entrance)
- Drive time: 2 hours to 2.5 hours in normal conditions
- Road condition: Fully paved tarmac from Kigali to the park gate. No dirt road required to reach the main entrance.
- Best departure time: Leave Kigali by 5:30 AM to reach the gate for opening at 6:00 AM and catch the best morning game viewing
The Route Step by Step
Kigali -> Kayonza junction (84 km): Take the Eastern Highway (RN3) east from Kigali. This is a wide, fast, well-maintained road. Pass through Rwamagana town at around 45 km -- good fuel station here. Continue to Kayonza junction.
Kayonza junction -> Akagera South Gate (28 km): At Kayonza, turn north (left if coming from Kigali) onto the road toward Akagera. The road narrows slightly but remains paved. Pass through Kabarondo town. The park gate appears after the Kabarondo junction -- you will see the Akagera National Park signs clearly.
Fuel and Supplies -- Where to Stop
- Rwamagana (45 km from Kigali): Total fuel station on the main road. Good stop if you did not fill up in Kigali.
- Kayonza town: Last fuel station before the park. Always fill up at Kayonza. There is no fuel inside Akagera -- if you run low inside a 1,100 km2 park, you have a serious problem.
- Water and food: Buy at Kayonza or bring from Kigali. Limited options between Kayonza and the gate.
Which Gate to Use
Akagera has two main entry gates:
- South Gate (Akagera Main Gate): The primary entrance. Coming from Kigali via Kayonza, this is where you arrive. Akagera Game Lodge is here. Most visitors use this gate.
- North Gate: Used if approaching from the north (Kagera area). Not the route from Kigali.
The park booking office is at the South Gate. If you have pre-booked your entry fees online through the Rwanda Development Board (rdb.rw), show your confirmation at the gate.
Park Entry Fees 2026
- Non-resident adult: $40 per person per day
- Vehicle entry: $40 per vehicle per day
- Night game drive: $35 per person (add-on, book at the gate)
- Boat cruise on Lake Ihema: $35 per person (highly recommended -- hippos and birdlife)
Which Vehicle Do You Need?
The road from Kigali to the South Gate is accessible in any car -- even a sedan. Inside the park is different:
- Main game viewing circuits: gravel tracks, accessible in a good RAV4
- Northern sector and wetland tracks: rough, sometimes muddy -- Land Cruiser or Prado recommended
- Wet season (March-May, Oct-Nov): 4x4 with good clearance strongly recommended for all in-park driving
For most visitors during dry season, a Toyota RAV4 2018+ from $60/day is the right vehicle. For the northern sector and serious off-road game viewing, book a Land Cruiser from $170/day.
Best Game Viewing Areas Inside Akagera
- Lake Ihema circuit (south): Best for hippos, crocodiles, and birdlife. Flat, easy tracks. Good in any 4x4.
- Mutumba Hills (north): Lions and large mammals. Rougher tracks. Best in a Land Cruiser.
- Muyumbu wetlands: Shoebill stork territory -- one of Africa's most sought-after bird sightings. Early morning only.
Where to Stay Near Akagera
- Akagera Game Lodge (inside the park, South Gate): mid-range, beautiful lake views
- Ruzizi Tented Lodge (inside the park): more remote, excellent atmosphere
- Kamira Camp: budget option inside the park
Staying inside the park means you can do dawn and dusk game drives without rushing through the gate. Worth the premium.
Combining Akagera with Other Destinations
Akagera sits in eastern Rwanda. Common combinations:
- Kigali + Akagera (2 days): Drive out in the morning, 2 nights inside, return to Kigali. Total driving: ~225 km round trip.
- Akagera + Volcanoes NP (5-7 days): East to west Rwanda -- safari then gorillas. See our 7-day itinerary guide.
