Kigali Car Rental Insurance — What Is Actually Covered and What Is Not
Insurance is the topic most people want to understand when renting a car in Kigali — and rightfully so. Rwanda's roads are generally safe, but accidents happen, and understanding your coverage before you drive away prevents the most unpleasant post-trip surprise. Here is the honest breakdown of what is included in every Rent Cars Kigali rental and what is not.
What Is Always Included — No Extra Charge
Every vehicle in the Rent Cars Kigali fleet comes with comprehensive third-party insurance as standard. This is included in the daily rental rate — not an add-on, not an optional extra. It covers:
- Third-party property damage (damage to another vehicle or property caused by your rental car)
- Third-party personal injury (medical costs for other parties in an accident caused by the rental vehicle)
- The vehicle itself is insured against theft, fire, and accidental damage subject to excess/deductible
The Excess (Deductible)
Like virtually all car rental insurance globally, there is an excess — the amount you are responsible for in the event of a claim. This means if you have a minor accident causing $500 in damage and the excess is $300, you pay $300 and the insurance covers $200. The specific excess amount varies by vehicle class and will be clearly stated in your rental agreement before you sign. Ask us to explain this when you collect the vehicle if you want clarity.
What Is NOT Covered
Standard rental insurance exclusions apply. You are not covered for:
- Damage caused by driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Rwanda has zero tolerance for drink-driving.
- Damage caused by driving off-road beyond the vehicle's capability. Taking a Corolla through a flooded river track voids insurance.
- Tyre punctures and wheel damage caused by road hazards — these are often excluded in African rental markets and are the renter's responsibility unless caused by a vehicle defect.
- Windscreen and glass damage may be excluded depending on cause — verify with us at collection.
- Personal belongings stolen from the vehicle. Your travel insurance should cover this.
- Accidents caused by a second unauthorised driver (i.e. someone not on the rental agreement driving the vehicle).
Do You Need Additional Travel Insurance?
Yes — for any Rwanda trip, especially one involving national parks, gorilla trekking, and remote self-driving, we recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance that covers:
- Medical evacuation (hospitals in rural Rwanda are limited — medical evacuation to Kigali or Nairobi can cost $5,000+ without cover)
- Trip cancellation (gorilla permits cost $1,500 — protect that investment)
- Personal baggage and belongings
- Excess waiver for your rental car deductible (many travel insurance policies include this)
What to Do in Case of an Accident
- Ensure everyone is safe and call emergency services if required (Rwanda Police: 112)
- Do NOT move the vehicles until police have attended (required for insurance documentation in Rwanda)
- Photograph all damage and the accident scene thoroughly
- Call Rent Cars Kigali immediately on +250 788 362 035 — we will guide you through the process
- Get a police report — this is required for any insurance claim
Why Our Insurance Matters
Some very cheap car rental operators in Kigali operate without proper insurance documentation. If you are stopped at a police checkpoint (common on all Rwanda routes), the officer will check insurance validity. At Rent Cars Kigali, every vehicle carries valid, current comprehensive insurance — you will never fail a checkpoint check because of us.
