How to Get from Kigali to Lake Kivu — Bus vs Car Rental (2026)

How to Get from Kigali to Lake Kivu

Lake Kivu is one of Rwanda's most beautiful destinations — and one of the most frequently Googled for transport options. Here is the complete honest comparison of every way to get there from Kigali.

Option 1: Public Bus (Volcano Express / Other Operators)

Public buses run from Nyabugogo bus terminal in Kigali to Rubavu (Gisenyi) on the northern shore of Lake Kivu. They also run to Karongi (Kibuye) on the central shore.

  • Kigali to Rubavu (Gisenyi): 3–4 hours, ~2,000–3,500 RWF per person
  • Kigali to Karongi (Kibuye): 2.5–3 hours, ~2,000–3,000 RWF per person
  • Departure: Nyabugogo bus terminal, Kigali — multiple departures daily from 6 AM
  • Comfort: Basic. Luggage goes on the roof or squeezed inside. No AC.

Bus Pros

  • Very cheap — under $3 per person
  • Frequent departures throughout the day
  • Drops you in town centre — from there you take a boda boda to your hotel

Bus Cons

  • No flexibility — you arrive in town and then need other transport to your actual hotel or beach
  • Cannot stop anywhere en route (the road is beautiful — you will want to stop)
  • Luggage handling is stressful on a packed bus
  • You cannot visit Volcanoes National Park on the way (major route combination visitors miss)
  • Getting around Lake Kivu itself — boat tours, Congo Nile Trail access — requires hiring transport on arrival anyway

Option 2: Private Transfer / Taxi

A private car from a Kigali taxi driver to Lake Kivu: $80–$150 one way for the whole car. More comfortable than the bus but you are dropped at your hotel with no vehicle for the rest of your stay — and Lake Kivu is best explored by moving between towns and access points.

Option 3: Rental Car (Best for Most Visitors)

Driving from Kigali to Lake Kivu yourself — or with one of our drivers — is the best way to do this journey. Here is why:

  • Stop at Volcanoes National Park en route — Musanze is directly on the way if you go via the northern route. Add a gorilla trek and arrive at the lake the same day.
  • Stop at viewpoints — the descent into Rubavu with the lake and Congo visible ahead is one of Rwanda's great driving moments
  • Move freely at the lake — drive to different beach spots, the Congo Nile Trail access, different towns along the shore
  • No bus terminal stress — your car is at your hotel when you need it

Driving Details: Kigali to Lake Kivu

  • Kigali to Rubavu (northern shore, via Musanze): 165 km, 2.5–3 hours
  • Kigali to Karongi (central shore, direct): 114 km, 2–2.5 hours
  • Road condition: Fully paved, excellent. No 4x4 needed for this route.
  • Rental car: Toyota Vitz or Corolla from $35/day works fine. RAV4 from $60/day if you are also visiting Volcanoes NP.

The Combination Most Visitors Miss
