How to Get from Kigali to Lake Kivu
Lake Kivu is one of Rwanda's most beautiful destinations — and one of the most frequently Googled for transport options. Here is the complete honest comparison of every way to get there from Kigali.
Option 1: Public Bus (Volcano Express / Other Operators)
Public buses run from Nyabugogo bus terminal in Kigali to Rubavu (Gisenyi) on the northern shore of Lake Kivu. They also run to Karongi (Kibuye) on the central shore.
- Kigali to Rubavu (Gisenyi): 3–4 hours, ~2,000–3,500 RWF per person
- Kigali to Karongi (Kibuye): 2.5–3 hours, ~2,000–3,000 RWF per person
- Departure: Nyabugogo bus terminal, Kigali — multiple departures daily from 6 AM
- Comfort: Basic. Luggage goes on the roof or squeezed inside. No AC.

- Drops you in town centre — from there you take a boda boda to your hotel

- No flexibility — you arrive in town and then need other transport to your actual hotel or beach

- You cannot visit Volcanoes National Park on the way (major route combination visitors miss)
- Getting around Lake Kivu itself — boat tours, Congo Nile Trail access — requires hiring transport on arrival anyway
Option 2: Private Transfer / Taxi
A private car from a Kigali taxi driver to Lake Kivu: $80–$150 one way for the whole car. More comfortable than the bus but you are dropped at your hotel with no vehicle for the rest of your stay — and Lake Kivu is best explored by moving between towns and access points.
