Akagera's game tracks are a mixture of graded murram (dirt) roads and rougher seasonal tracks, especially in the northern sector where lions and rhinos are most frequently spotted. In the dry season (June–September), a RAV4 can handle most of the main circuit. In the wet season (March–May, October–November), some tracks become soft, slippery, and deeply rutted — and this is where you will be genuinely grateful for a Land Cruiser V8 or Prado.
Additionally, higher ground clearance means you can stop on ridge lines for panoramic views across the lake system — a defining Akagera experience that low-clearance vehicles cannot safely do.

Land Cruiser V8 — Best Choice ($110/day)
The Land Cruiser V8 is the professional safari standard. High clearance, diesel engine, massive tyres, and a commanding view height make this the definitive Akagera vehicle. If your budget allows it, this is the one. The V8 also comfortably seats 7–8, so small group safaris can share the cost.
Toyota RAV4 — Good for Dry Season ($35–$50/day)
For a dry season visit on a tighter budget, the Toyota RAV4 is adequate on Akagera's main circuit. Stick to the primary routes and avoid the deep northern sector tracks in the afternoon when they soften. The RAV4 is our most popular rental vehicle in Rwanda for good reason.
Toyota Hilux 4x4 Pickup — For Equipment-Heavy Trips ($75/day)
If you are a wildlife photographer with substantial camera equipment, the Hilux pickup gives you a load bed for gear cases and a high driving position. Some photographers mount camera rigs to the bed for game drive shooting.
Getting to Akagera from Kigali
Akagera's main south gate (Kayonza) is approximately 100 km from central Kigali — about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours on the RN3 highway. The road to the gate is good tarmac. Factor in the park entry fee ($40/person/day for foreign visitors) and vehicle entry fee when budgeting.
Many visitors combine Akagera with Kigali's city highlights — including the Kigali Genocide Memorial and the Inema Arts Centre — making it a natural 2–3 day itinerary from the capital.
Do You Need a Guide Inside Akagera?
Self-drive is permitted inside Akagera National Park and many visitors do it successfully. However, for lion and rhino tracking, the park recommends booking a ranger guide through African Parks (who manage Akagera). Guides dramatically increase your lion-sighting probability. You can self-drive to the guide meeting point and then follow the guide's vehicle into the northern sector.
