You have booked your flights, sorted your visa, and reserved your rental car from Rent Cars Kigali. Now the question every Rwanda visitor eventually reaches: what do I actually pack?
Here is the practical, experience-based packing list — not a generic Africa list, but one specifically built for Rwanda road trips.
The Rwanda Road Trip Packing Essentials
Documents (Non-Negotiable)
- Passport (valid 6+ months beyond travel dates)
- Driver's license (home country — keep it with you always)
- International Driving Permit (strongly recommended)
- Yellow fever vaccination certificate (if required for your nationality)
- Gorilla trekking permit (if applicable — print a copy)
- Travel insurance documents
- Rental agreement (we provide this — keep it in the car)
Clothing — Rwanda Specific
Rwanda's climate varies significantly by altitude. Kigali (1,500m) is warm but not hot. Musanze and Volcanoes NP (2,000m+) can be genuinely cold, especially at night and early morning for gorilla trekking.
- Lightweight layers for daytime driving — Rwanda is not tropical-beach hot
- Warm jacket or fleece — essential for Volcanoes NP and Nyungwe at altitude
- Long-sleeved shirts and long trousers for gorilla trekking (forest protection)
- Comfortable walking shoes — not flip flops for trekking
- Sturdy hiking boots if you plan serious trekking
- Rain jacket — essential for rainy season, useful year-round at altitude
- One smart casual outfit for Kigali restaurants
Gorilla Trekking Specific Pack
- Gardening gloves or thin work gloves (for holding vegetation on steep trails)
- Long waterproof trousers or gaiters (the forest floor is muddy)
- Walking pole (the park rents these but bringing your own is better)
- Daypack with rain cover (for camera, water, snacks)
- Insect repellent
- Sunscreen (surprisingly necessary at altitude)
Electronics
- Phone with offline Google Maps downloaded for Rwanda
- Power bank — essential for long driving days
- Camera (gorillas deserve a real camera — your phone is fine too)
- UK-type adapter (Rwanda uses Type G sockets — same as UK)
- Car charger for USB — we have 12V socket in all vehicles
Health and Medical
- Malaria prophylaxis (start before travel — consult your doctor)
- Insect repellent with DEET 30%+ for evenings
- Personal medications — supply for entire trip plus extra
- Basic first aid kit (plasters, antiseptic, paracetamol)
- Rehydration sachets — useful after strenuous trekking days
- Hand sanitizer
Money
- USD cash — $200–$300 in clean bills (2009 or newer)
- Visa or Mastercard for hotels and larger purchases
- Small amounts of RWF for daily expenses (withdraw from Kigali ATM on arrival)
What NOT to Pack for Rwanda
- Plastic bags: Completely banned in Rwanda — do not bring any and do not buy any
- Camouflage clothing: Not permitted in Rwanda — avoid any military-style patterns
- Excessive luggage: The roads are winding — traveling light makes the road trip better
Rwanda's Plastic Bag Ban — What This Means Practically
Rwanda has one of the world's strictest bans on plastic bags. At the airport, customs officials sometimes check bags and may confiscate plastic bags you have brought. Use fabric bags, reusable containers, and cloth pouches for your packing.
Luggage Recommendation for Different Vehicles
- Toyota Corolla: 2 medium suitcases + daypack — no more
- Toyota RAV4: 2 large suitcases + 2 daypacks comfortably
- Land Cruiser V8: ample space for large groups with generous luggage
