What Shoes to Wear in Rwanda -- Footwear Guide for Every Activity

What Shoes to Wear in Rwanda -- Activity by Activity

Footwear is one of the most searched Rwanda packing questions -- and the answer genuinely varies by activity. Get this wrong and you are either miserable on a gorilla trek or lugging heavy boots through Kigali restaurants unnecessarily.

Gorilla Trekking Footwear -- Non-Negotiable

Waterproof hiking boots with ankle support. This is not optional. The forest floor at Volcanoes NP is consistently muddy regardless of season. Wet grass, tree roots, steep slopes. Trail runners get soaked in 15 minutes. Low-cut shoes provide inadequate ankle support on steep uneven terrain. You need a full waterproof hiking boot -- break them in before your trip. This is the most important footwear decision of your Rwanda trip.

Kigali City Footwear

Anything comfortable. Kigali is hilly -- you will walk more than you expect. Comfortable walking shoes, clean sneakers, or smart casual shoes all work. The city is safe and well-paved in central areas. Sandals are fine for restaurants and the convention centre area. Bring something that looks presentable if you have business meetings.

Akagera Safari Footwear

Safari driving is done from inside the vehicle -- you rarely leave the car near wildlife. Comfortable closed shoes or light trail shoes are fine. If you are doing a walking safari (available at Akagera with a ranger), closed sturdy shoes minimum. The savannah grass can hide thorns and the terrain is uneven off the tracks.

Nyungwe Forest Footwear

Same as gorilla trekking -- waterproof hiking boots required. Nyungwe's trails are steep and muddy. The canopy walk platform is dry but the approach trail is not. If you are only doing the canopy walk platform (not the hike to it), solid walking shoes with grip are adequate. For chimp trekking: proper hiking boots.

Lake Kivu Beach

Sandals or flip-flops for the lakefront. Some beaches have rocky entry points -- water shoes are useful if you plan to swim. Kigali-to-lake driving day: wear comfortable shoes in the car, switch to sandals at the lake.

Mountain Hiking (Bisoke, other volcanoes)

Heavy-duty waterproof hiking boots with ankle support -- same recommendation as gorilla trekking but even more important for the steeper sections above 2,500m. Gaiters also recommended for the upper trails.

What to Pack in Summary

  • 1 pair waterproof hiking boots with ankle support: for gorilla trek and mountain hikes
  • 1 pair comfortable walking shoes or clean trainers: for Kigali and light activities
  • 1 pair sandals: for Lake Kivu and evenings

Three pairs of shoes covers every Rwanda activity. Load them in the boot of your rental car and switch as your itinerary demands.
