One of the most common pre-trip questions from visitors to Rwanda: what language do they speak, and will I be able to get around with just English?
The answer will reassure most visitors — and here's why from the team at Rent Cars Kigali.
What Languages Are Spoken in Rwanda?
Rwanda has four official languages:
- Kinyarwanda — The national language spoken by virtually all Rwandans as their first language
- English — Official language of government, business, and education since 2008
- French — Official language, historically dominant, still widely spoken especially among older generations
- Swahili — Official language, widely understood, especially in trade and commerce
Will English Get You Around Rwanda?
Yes — very comfortably in Kigali and tourist areas.
Rwanda made a bold decision in 2008 to switch its entire education system from French to English as the language of instruction. The result, 15+ years later, is that most Rwandans under 35 in urban areas speak functional to fluent English. In Kigali specifically, you can navigate virtually every situation in English:
- Hotels — excellent English throughout
- Restaurants — English menus and English-speaking staff at most establishments
- National parks — all guides speak English, many speak excellent English
- Car rental — our entire team communicates in English
- Government offices — English is standard
Where English Is Less Reliable
In rural areas and with older Rwandans, French is often more useful than English. At rural markets, basic Kinyarwanda phrases go a long way and are very warmly received.
Useful Kinyarwanda Phrases for Visitors
- Muraho — Hello
- Amakuru? — How are you?
- Ni meza — Fine / Good
- Murakoze — Thank you
- Yego — Yes
- Oya — No
- Ngahe? — How much?
- Imbabare — Sorry / Excuse me
Even attempting a few words of Kinyarwanda is enormously appreciated by Rwandans. It transforms a transaction into a genuine human moment.
