Can You Travel to Rwanda with a Baby or Toddler?
Yes -- and more families do it every year than you might expect. Rwanda is safe, clean, and surprisingly child-friendly. But travelling with an infant or toddler here requires more planning than a standard adult trip. This is the honest guide that answers every question anxious parents actually have.
Is Rwanda Safe for Babies and Toddlers?
Rwanda is one of the safer African countries for family travel with infants. Kigali is clean, medical facilities exist for emergencies, and the general security situation is excellent. The main health considerations for small children are the same as for adults but require more careful management:
- Malaria: The biggest concern for babies and toddlers. Kigali and high-altitude areas have low risk but Akagera National Park is a moderate-to-high malaria zone. Paediatric malaria prophylaxis is available but must be prescribed by your doctor before travel. Mosquito nets, DEET-free child-safe repellent, and long sleeves at dusk are essential. Consult your paediatrician at least 6 weeks before departure.
- Food and water: Bottled water only for formula, drinking, and brushing teeth. Breast milk is safest for infants. Avoid raw foods and ice outside established restaurants. See our water safety guide.
- Altitude: Kigali sits at 1,567 metres. Volcanoes National Park is at 2,000 metres+. Altitude sickness is rarely a serious problem for infants but some babies are more sensitive to altitude change than adults. Monitor for unusual irritability or feeding changes in the first 24 hours.
- Sun: Rwanda is 2 degrees south of the equator. UV is intense. Use SPF 50 on any exposed infant skin from day one.
Vaccinations for Babies Travelling to Rwanda
Consult your paediatrician or travel health clinic -- do not rely on adult vaccination advice for infants. Key points:
- Yellow fever vaccine is not recommended for infants under 6 months. If travelling from a yellow fever country, you may need a medical exemption letter.
- Hepatitis A vaccine: not given until 12 months in most countries -- strict food and water hygiene is the substitute for younger infants.
- Ensure your child's routine immunisations (MMR, DTP, rotavirus etc.) are up to date before travel.
Is Gorilla Trekking Possible with a Baby?
No -- children under 15 are not permitted on gorilla trekking in Rwanda. This is a firm Rwanda Development Board rule to protect both the gorillas and the children. Gorilla treks involve 1-6 hours of strenuous mountain hiking in humid forest and are not suitable for small children regardless of the age rule.
If you are travelling as a family with a baby or young child, one parent can trek while the other stays with the children. Plan this logistics in advance -- Musanze has good family guesthouses and some have play areas.
Which Rwanda Experiences Work Well with Small Children
- Lake Kivu beaches: Calm, clean water. Sandy beaches at some Rubavu and Karongi hotels. Children love it. Safe swimming in designated areas.
- Akagera game drives: Excellent with toddlers and older children -- stay in the vehicle, windows up or down, watching animals up close. Exciting and accessible. No hiking required.
- Kigali city: The Genocide Memorial is not appropriate for young children. The rest of the city -- markets, restaurants, the Convention Centre area -- is fine with a stroller.
- Twin Lakes Burera and Ruhondo: Beautiful, calm, no hiking required. Drive there and look. Toddlers love the view.
Car Seats in Rwanda
Rwanda's road traffic law requires appropriate child restraints in vehicles. As a practical matter, rental car companies in Kigali do not all stock child seats as standard -- you must request one explicitly when booking.
We offer baby and child seats as an add-on to any rental -- request when you book. Available for infants, toddlers, and older children. Cost: $5/day added to your rental.
Alternatively, bring a lightweight travel car seat from home -- some families prefer this for guaranteed fit and familiarity. Your car seat fits in the boot without issue.
What to Pack for a Baby in Rwanda
- Nappies/diapers: bring enough from home or buy at Simba Supermarket in Kigali (limited brands available)
- Baby formula: bring from home -- Rwandan supermarkets stock limited imported brands
- Child-safe insect repellent (DEET-free for under 2s)
- SPF 50 baby sunscreen
- Oral rehydration salts (paediatric)
- Any prescription medication in original packaging with doctor's note
- Portable mosquito net for sleeping (in addition to lodge nets)
Medical Care in Rwanda for Children
King Faisal Hospital in Kigali has a paediatric department and is the recommended facility for any medical emergency involving children. Outside Kigali, district hospitals can handle basic emergencies but serious cases require transfer to Kigali. Travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is non-negotiable when travelling with infants.
