Is Self-Driving in Rwanda Safe?
Yes — with some preparation. Rwanda ranks among the top countries in Africa for road safety. The government has invested heavily in road infrastructure, and traffic laws are enforced seriously. Speed cameras exist on major routes, and police checkpoints are common but routine.

Road Conditions Across Rwanda
The main road from Kigali to Musanze (Volcanoes NP) is excellent — smooth tarmac all the way. The route to Akagera is also good. Some roads inside national parks and rural areas are unpaved, which is why a 4x4 like the RAV4 is strongly recommended for any trip outside the city.
