Rwanda Travel Tips 2026 — 20 Things to Know Before You Go
Rwanda is one of Africa's most rewarding destinations, but it rewards those who are prepared. Here are 20 things — practical, honest, and specific — that make the difference between a stressful trip and an extraordinary one.
1. Book Your Gorilla Permit Months in Advance
$1,500 per person. Peak season (June–September) sells out 4–6 months ahead. Book at rdb.rw the moment your trip is confirmed. Missing your permit date = $1,500 lost and no gorillas.
2. A Rental Car Is Not a Luxury — It Is the Best Value
Splitting a Toyota RAV4 at $60/day between two people is $30 per person per day — cheaper than taxis, more flexible than shared shuttles, and the only real way to see Rwanda freely. Free airport delivery included.
3. The Driving Side is the RIGHT Side
Rwanda drives on the right-hand side of the road. If you are from the UK, Australia, or Southern Africa, this is the biggest mental adjustment. Give yourself 30 minutes in Kigali to settle in before hitting the highway.
4. Download Google Maps Offline Before Leaving Kigali
Signal drops on mountain roads. Download Rwanda on Google Maps before you depart and carry Maps.me as backup. Read our Google Maps Rwanda guide for detail.
5. "Bolt" Not "Uber" in Kigali
Bolt is the dominant ride-hailing app in Rwanda. Uber exists but has fewer drivers. Either way, both only work within Kigali city. Read our Bolt Rwanda guide.
6. Carry Cash for Anything Outside Kigali
Cards work in Kigali. Once you leave the city, cash is king — roadside food, rural guesthouses, park tips. Withdraw enough RWF before leaving Kigali. See our road trip cash guide.
7. Buy a Local SIM at the Airport
MTN Rwanda SIM cards are available in the arrivals hall at KGL. Buy one immediately — $2 for the SIM, data bundles from $3. Better coverage than roaming and essential for WhatsApp navigation.
8. Police Checkpoints Are Routine — Do Not Panic
You will hit 5–8 checkpoints on any upcountry drive. Keep documents in the glove box and present calmly. 60 seconds and you are through. Read our checkpoint guide.
9. The Tap Water Rule
Kigali: brush teeth, do not drink. Outside Kigali: bottled water only. Read our tap water guide. Buy 6-litre Inyange bottles at Simba Supermarket before you leave Kigali.
10. Yellow Fever Certificate Is Required
If you are arriving from a country on Rwanda's yellow fever risk list, you must show a yellow fever vaccination certificate at immigration. Check current requirements at the Rwanda Migration website before flying.
11. You Do NOT Need Malaria Tablets for Kigali or Volcanoes NP
High-altitude areas of Rwanda have very low malaria risk. If you are visiting Akagera or Lake Kivu, consult your doctor. Read our malaria guide.
12. Tipping Is Not Mandatory But Is Expected for Gorilla Guides
Tip your lead ranger $10–$20. Porter $10–$15. Restaurant: optional 1,000–3,000 RWF. Read our full tipping guide.
13. Kigali is Genuinely Very Safe
No need to restrict your movements or avoid areas. Kigali is one of Africa's safest cities for tourists. Night driving in the city is fine. Upcountry roads are safe in daylight — avoid driving any rural roads after dark.
14. Stock Up on Supplies in Kigali Before Any Road Trip
Simba Supermarket (Remera branch is best) stocks everything. Once you leave Kigali, options thin quickly. Read our Kigali supermarket guide.
15. Visa for Most Nationalities: You Do Not Need to Pre-Arrange
Over 90 nationalities are visa-free or can get a visa on arrival. Americans, British, EU citizens, Australians — all visa-free. Read our full Rwanda visa guide.
16. The Gorilla Trek Starts at 7 AM — Leave Kigali at 4:30 AM
No exceptions. Late arrivals lose their trek and their permit money. Set two alarms. We offer chauffeur service specifically for gorilla trekking day so you can sleep in the car.
17. Rwanda Ranks Are in Kinyarwanda — So is the Distance
Road signs show distances in km. Speed limits are in km/h. Rwanda drives metric throughout.
18. The Best Road Trip Month Is June–September
Dry season. Gorilla trails are not muddy. Akagera game viewing is best. Blue skies for photos. Book everything early for this period.
19. You Can Pay for Car Rental From Any Country in the World
We accept Visa, Mastercard, Amex, PayPal, bank wire, MTN MoMo, and cash (USD/RWF). No surcharges for international payments. Book from the UK, USA, Germany, Japan — anywhere.
20. The Drive Itself Is Part of the Experience
Rwanda's roads go through some of the most beautiful landscapes on the continent. The drive to Musanze with the volcanoes ahead. The descent to Lake Kivu. The forest closing in on the Nyungwe road. A rental car gives you the freedom to stop, breathe, and actually see all of it.
