Cash on a Rwanda Road Trip: The Practical Guide
Rwanda is more cashless than most African countries, but once you leave Kigali and hit the road, cash becomes essential. Mis-managing this is one of the most common mistakes first-time Rwanda visitors make — they card-tap their way through Kigali and then find themselves scrambling for RWF at a park gate, a roadside lunch spot, or a rural guesthouse.
Where Cards Work Reliably
- Kigali hotels, supermarkets, and most sit-down restaurants
- Total fuel stations in Kigali and major towns
- Akagera Game Lodge and other upscale park lodges
- National park entry gates — increasingly card-enabled (but confirm each time)
Where You Need Cash
- Roadside food: local restaurants (ibitoke, brochettes, fresh juice) between cities are cash-only
- Market purchases: Kimironko, Nyamirambo, Musanze market — exclusively cash
- Small guesthouses outside Kigali: many accept mobile money (MTN MoMo) but not cards
- Parking fees: Kigali city centre parking enforcers are cash-only
- Border crossings: small fees, tips, and informal charges at Cyanika/Katuna need small bills
- Community guides, walking tour tips, porters at gorilla trekking start points
How Much to Withdraw Before Each Leg
| Trip Leg | Recommended Cash | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Kigali city day | 20,000–40,000 RWF (~$18–$36) | Parking, market, street food |
| Kigali ? Volcanoes NP | 50,000–80,000 RWF (~$45–$72) | Fuel (if not card station), roadside stops, tips |
| Kigali ? Akagera | 80,000–120,000 RWF (~$72–$109) | Park fees if not pre-paid, boat cruise, lunch |
| Kigali ? Lake Kivu | 60,000–100,000 RWF (~$54–$90) | Guesthouses, ferry, Congo Nile Trail |
| Cross-border (Uganda) | $50–$100 USD cash | Border fees, Uganda fuel, Ugandan SIM card |
Where to Get Money Outside Kigali
- Musanze (Ruhengeri): Bank of Kigali ATM in town centre. BK and I&M branches. Withdraw before heading to Volcanoes.
- Kayonza: BK ATM near the main junction — last reliable ATM before Akagera.
- Huye (Butare): Multiple ATMs. Withdraw here before Nyungwe and Lake Kivu.
- Rubavu (Gisenyi): Multiple bank branches on the lakefront strip.
The Golden Rule
Withdraw enough cash in Kigali to cover the first 48 hours of your road trip. Then top up in whichever major town is on your route. Never rely on ATM availability inside or near national parks — there are none.
MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) for Travellers
If you buy a local SIM (MTN is recommended), you can set up a MoMo wallet and pay at many rural guesthouses, supermarkets, and fuel stations that do not take cards. Increasingly useful for travellers staying more than a week.
