Does Google Maps Work in Rwanda?
Yes — Google Maps works well in Rwanda, especially on the main tourist routes. For most self-drive visitors, it is all you need. But there are specific situations where it falls short, and knowing them before you leave Kigali could save you a bad day.
Where Google Maps Works Reliably
- All main highways and paved roads between cities
- Kigali city navigation — excellent, very accurate
- Kigali to Musanze (Volcanoes NP): works perfectly
- Kigali to Akagera: works well on the main road
- Kigali to Gisenyi/Rubavu: excellent
- Kigali to Huye/Nyungwe: works on the main RN1
Where Google Maps Struggles
- Inside national parks: Track data is incomplete. Park maps provided at entry gates are more useful.
- Remote mountain roads near Volcanoes NP: Some trekking access tracks are not mapped
- Rural areas in the Eastern Province: Road quality does not always match what Maps shows
- New roads: Rwanda builds fast — some new tarmac roads opened in 2024–2025 are not yet in Maps
Download Offline Maps — This Is Not Optional
Mobile data coverage outside Kigali, while generally good on MTN/Airtel, can drop in mountain areas and some valleys. Download Rwanda offline on Google Maps before you leave Kigali. It takes about 90 seconds and means you can navigate without any signal at all.

Best Backup: What App Works Even When Google Fails
Maps.me (free, works fully offline) has better coverage of dirt tracks and rural Rwanda than Google Maps. Download it alongside Google Maps as your backup. It has saved many self-drivers on the approach to Nyungwe Forest.
Do Rental Cars in Kigali Have Built-In GPS?
Most 4x4 rentals — Land Cruisers, Prado, newer RAV4s — come with a built-in GPS screen. It is useful but not always updated. Use it as a backup to your phone. For our fleet, ask when booking if you need a GPS-equipped vehicle and we will prioritise it for you.
