Rwanda Road Trip Packing List - Everything Your Kigali Car Rental Needs Before You Leave

This packing list is built specifically for Rwanda: the roads, the distances, the national parks, and the fuel station gaps. Navigation and Connectivity

• MTN or Airtel Rwanda SIM with data. Available at Kigali Airport arrivals for a few thousand francs. Essential for Google Maps navigation and WhatsApp contact with your rental company. Buy it before you leave the airport - not after you need it on a dark mountain road.
• Offline Google Maps - Rwanda downloaded. Mobile data is patchy near Nyungwe Forest and on some Akagera approach roads. Download the offline Rwanda map in your hotel before each day's drive.
• Phone mount for the dashboard. Hands-free navigation is both the law and common sense. A simple phone mount that attaches to the air vent costs less than any traffic fine.
• Portable charger / power bank. A full day's Google Maps use drains a phone battery. A power bank keeps you navigated all day. Most Rent Cars Kigali vehicles have a USB charging port but a power bank provides backup.

Cash and Payment

• Rwandan Francs in small denominations. Rwanda is increasingly cashless in Kigali but rural fuel stations, market snacks, roadside stalls, and national park entry fees often require cash. Keep at least RWF 50,000-100,000 in the car at all times outside Kigali.
• USD cash as backup. Accepted at national parks (entry fees are charged in USD), lodges, and most tourist-facing businesses.

Water and Food for Long Drives

• 2 litres of bottled water per person minimum. Tap water is not safe to drink across Rwanda and remote roads have no shops. Fill up at a supermarket in Kigali before long routes. Simba Supermarket near the Convention Centre stocks everything.
• Snacks for national park days. Inside Akagera, Volcanoes NP, and Nyungwe there are no shops or filling stations. A 6-hour game drive or gorilla trek with no food is unpleasant. Pack energy bars, fruit, and sandwiches the morning you visit.
• A small cooler box. Not essential but genuinely useful for cold water on hot Akagera game drive days. Most Kigali supermarkets sell affordable soft coolers.

Documents - Keep These in the Glovebox

• Your driving licence. Original - not a photo. Required at every police checkpoint.
• Your rental agreement. Provided by Rent Cars Kigali at vehicle collection. Never leave the vehicle without it in the glovebox.
• Vehicle insurance certificate. Pre-loaded in every Rent Cars Kigali glovebox. Verify it is there when you collect the vehicle.
• Gorilla permit / national park booking confirmation. Print or download offline - park gates require proof of booking.

Medical and Safety Essentials

• Malaria prophylaxis. Rwanda is a malaria zone outside Kigali. Take your tablets as prescribed. Dusk and dawn in Akagera are highest-risk periods.
• Insect repellent. Especially for national park visits and Lake Kivu lakeside evenings.
• Sun protection. Rwanda sits near the equator at high altitude - the UV index is consistently high even when it feels cool.
• Hand sanitiser. Limited handwashing facilities at rural fuel stations and roadside stops.

Comfort for Long Drives

• A light blanket or fleece. Rwanda's highlands can be genuinely cold at altitude - Musanze and Nyungwe drop below 15 degrees Celsius at night and in the early morning. The car heater helps but a blanket for the early gorilla trek departure is welcome.

• Wet wipes. Invaluable on dusty Akagera game tracks where red murram dust enters everything.

Photography

• Camera with fully charged battery and empty memory cards. Check both the night before every park day - there is no charging inside Akagera or Volcanoes NP.
• Lens cloths. Dust and condensation on highland roads affect lens clarity. Clean before every park entry.
