Kwita Izina 2026 — Rwanda's Gorilla Naming Ceremony and How to Get There

Kwita Izina: Rwanda's Gorilla Naming Ceremony

Every September, Rwanda holds one of Africa's most extraordinary conservation events: Kwita Izina — the naming of newborn mountain gorillas born in Volcanoes National Park over the previous year. The name comes from the Kinyarwanda tradition of naming ceremonies for human newborns. The event draws dignitaries, celebrities, conservationists, and tourists from around the world, and it is completely unlike anything else in African tourism.

When Is Kwita Izina 2026?

Kwita Izina is held annually in September. The exact date for 2026 is confirmed by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) typically 2–3 months in advance. Check rdb.rw for the confirmed 2026 date. Historically it has been held in the second or third week of September.

Where Is It Held?

The ceremony takes place at the Kwita Izina Event Grounds in Musanze (formerly held at the base of the volcanoes, now at a dedicated outdoor venue). The event typically starts mid-morning and lasts 3–4 hours, followed by cultural performances and a conservation expo.

How to Attend

Kwita Izina is free and open to the public — but tickets (even free ones) should be registered in advance through the RDB website as numbers are managed. A small section of the ceremony is reserved for invited dignitaries; the public area is large and accessible.

The event draws large crowds — book accommodation in Musanze at least 2–3 months ahead for Kwita Izina week.

Combining Kwita Izina with Gorilla Trekking

This is the ideal Rwanda itinerary for September visitors:

  • Day 1: Drive from Kigali to Musanze (2 hours). Afternoon at the Twin Lakes.
  • Day 2: Gorilla trekking at Volcanoes National Park (permit booked months ahead — September is peak season).
  • Day 3: Kwita Izina ceremony in Musanze. Cultural events and conservation expo.
  • Day 4: Drive back to Kigali or continue to Lake Kivu.

Getting to Musanze for Kwita Izina

Musanze is 120 km from Kigali — a 2-hour drive on excellent paved roads. A rental car is by far the best way to attend Kwita Izina. Public transport exists but is slow and unreliable for time-sensitive event attendance. Renting a car means you can leave Kigali at your chosen time, park near the venue, and return or continue your trip at your own pace.

Kwita Izina week sees high demand for car rentals in Kigali — book your vehicle at least 4–6 weeks ahead for September travel.

What Happens at the Ceremony?

Wildlife rangers bring out the records of each newborn gorilla. Invited namers — which have included presidents, musicians, film stars, and conservation icons — each name one gorilla in Kinyarwanda. The name reveals something about the gorilla's personality, birth circumstances, or spirit. It is moving, joyful, and unlike anything else in Africa.
