Kigali to Nairobi: Fly or Drive?
Many East Africa visitors combine Rwanda and Kenya in one trip — gorilla trekking in Rwanda, then Masai Mara in Kenya. The question everyone asks: should you fly or rent a car and drive? Here is the honest answer.
The Route by Road
- Distance: approximately 1,600 km via Uganda (Kigali ? Kampala ? Nairobi)
- Drive time: 16–20 hours pure driving, typically 2–3 days with stops
- Countries crossed: Rwanda ? Uganda ? Kenya (3 border crossings: Gatuna, then Busia or Malaba)
- Road condition: Mixed. Rwanda and Kenya tarmac is good. Some Uganda sections are variable.
The Route by Air
- Flight time: 1 hour 30 minutes direct (RwandAir, Kenya Airways)
- Frequency: Multiple daily flights
- Cost: $80–$250 one-way depending on how far in advance you book
When to Fly
Flying is better when:
- You have 7 days or fewer in East Africa — the drive alone takes 2–3 days each way
- You are not interested in Uganda en route
- You are travelling solo without a road trip partner
- Your rental car is Rwanda-only (not cross-border permitted)
When to Drive
Driving makes sense when:
- You want to add Uganda to your itinerary — Bwindi gorillas, Queen Elizabeth NP, Kampala
- You have 14+ days and want a proper East Africa road trip
- You are 2 or more people — the car cost splits and the experience is richer
- You want flexibility to stop at Lake Victoria, Jinja (source of the Nile), or Bwindi
Cost Comparison for 2 People
- Fly: 2 × $150 average airfare = $300. Plus airport transfers each end = ~$350–400 total
- Drive: Cross-border 4x4 rental 3 days ~$250 + fuel ~$80 + Uganda/Kenya visas ~$100 + accommodation 2 nights ~$100 = ~$530. But you have seen Uganda en route.
Flying is cheaper if all you want is to get there. Driving is better if the journey is part of the experience.
The Middle Option: Fly One Way, Drive the Other
Some visitors fly Kigali to Nairobi at the start, spend time in Kenya, then rent a car in Nairobi and drive back through Uganda to Kigali — dropping off the car with us. We offer one-way drop-offs for certain routes. Ask us about this option.
