Kigali to Kampala Road Trip — Is It Possible and How Long Does It Take?

The Kigali to Kampala road trip is one of East Africa's great overland journeys — and yes, it is absolutely possible. Many travelers assume you need a flight between Rwanda and Uganda, but the road connection is surprisingly good and the journey itself is rewarding.

Here is everything you need to know from Rent Cars Kigali, where we regularly arrange cross-border vehicle authorizations for this exact route.

Is It Possible to Drive from Kigali to Kampala?

Yes — completely possible and regularly done. The two most common border crossings are:

  • Katuna/Gatuna border crossing — the most popular route, directly north from Kigali via Musanze. This crossing is well-established, handles significant traffic, and is the most straightforward for tourists.
  • Kagitumba/Mirama Hills border — further east, less common for tourists but an option for those doing a Uganda eastern circuit.

How Long Is the Drive from Kigali to Kampala?

Total distance: Approximately 500–520km via Katuna
Total drive time: 7 to 10 hours depending on border crossing time
Border crossing time: 1 to 3 hours depending on queues and day of week

The Rwanda side (Kigali to Katuna border): approximately 3 hours on excellent roads. The Uganda side (Kabale to Kampala): approximately 3.5–4 hours — roads are good but slower than Rwanda in places, with more traffic around Masaka and approaching Kampala.

The Route: Kigali ? Katuna ? Kampala

  5. Mbarara ? Masaka ? Kampala (2–3 hours including Kampala traffic)

Documents Needed at the Rwanda-Uganda Border

  • Valid passport with Rwanda and Uganda visas (or East Africa Tourist Visa — $100 covers both)
  • Vehicle cross-border authorization from your rental company (we provide this)
  • COMESA Yellow Card insurance (we arrange this — additional cost of $50)
  • Vehicle registration documents

Important: You Must Tell Your Rental Company in Advance

If you are renting a car in Kigali and driving to Uganda, you must arrange cross-border authorization before you go. Taking a rental car across the border without explicit authorization from the rental company is a serious breach of your rental agreement and invalidates your insurance. We need at least 3 days notice to prepare the correct documentation.

Is the Road Trip Worth It?

Absolutely — especially if you are combining gorilla trekking in Rwanda with gorilla trekking in Uganda's Bwindi, or adding a Uganda safari (Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls) to your East Africa trip. The drive through southern Uganda via Kabale, Lake Mburo National Park, and Masaka is genuinely beautiful.
