Driving from Kigali to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda is one of the two places in the world where you can trek mountain gorillas (the other being Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park). Many visitors — especially those with gorilla permits at Bwindi — choose to fly into Kigali and drive across. It is often cheaper than flying into Entebbe and the Kigali?Bwindi road is genuinely one of Africa's great drives.
Distance and Drive Time
- Kigali to Kisoro, Uganda (gateway to Bwindi): 175 km, approximately 4–5 hours
- Kigali to Bwindi (Buhoma sector): approximately 200 km, 5–6 hours including border crossing
- Kigali to Bwindi (Rushaga sector): approximately 160 km, 4 hours — this is the closest sector to the Rwanda border
The Route
Drive north from Kigali toward Musanze on RN2 (the Volcanoes NP road). From Musanze, continue west toward Cyanika border post — this crossing is far quicker than the Katuna/Gatuna crossing most people think of. Cross at Cyanika/Bunagana into Uganda. From the border, it is approximately 40 km to Kisoro and then another 15–40 km to your Bwindi sector depending on which trekking group you are assigned.
Cyanika Border Crossing — What to Know
- Open daily: approximately 6 AM – 6 PM. Do not arrive after 5 PM.
- East African Tourist Visa ($100) covers both Rwanda and Uganda — buy it online before you travel
- Your car rental cross-border permit is essential — confirm this when booking your vehicle
- COMESA insurance must cover Uganda — confirm with your rental company
- Border crossing typically takes 30–60 minutes in each direction
Which Car to Use
The road from Kigali to Musanze and the Uganda border is paved and excellent. The road from Kisoro to Bwindi park gates is variable — some sections are dirt and get muddy in wet season. A Toyota Land Cruiser or Prado is strongly recommended. A RAV4 2018+ can manage in dry season but is not ideal.
Combining Bwindi and Volcanoes NP in One Trip
With a cross-border rental, many visitors do: Day 1 — gorilla trekking at Volcanoes NP Rwanda, Day 2 — drive to Bwindi, Day 3 — gorilla trekking at Bwindi Uganda. This gives you two gorilla experiences, two habituated groups, and two completely different forest environments — all in three days from Kigali. One of the most extraordinary short safari itineraries in Africa.
