- Return to Kigali: Typically mid-afternoon to evening
As you can see, the 4:30 AM departure from Kigali is unavoidable if you are not staying in Musanze the night before. Most experienced guides recommend staying overnight in Musanze to give yourself a more relaxed morning and arrive refreshed for what is a physically demanding trek.

Driving in the dark on an unfamiliar mountain road at 4:30 AM, possibly tired from travel, is not the ideal start to a $1,500 gorilla permit day. Your driver handles the journey while you sleep, gets you to Kinigi on time, waits at the park during the trek, and drives you home while you absorb the experience. The $20 is genuinely the best money you will spend in Rwanda.
Gorilla Permit — How to Book
Gorilla permits cost $1,500 per person and must be booked through the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) website or through an accredited tour operator. Permits sell out months in advance for peak season (June–September). Book your permit first, then arrange your car hire to fit the permit date. Never assume you can get a walk-in permit — you cannot.
What to Wear and Bring on the Trek
- Long-sleeved shirt and long trousers (protects against nettles and insects in the forest)
- Waterproof jacket (the Virungas get rain even in dry season)
