Can I Drive in Rwanda with a US License? American Drivers Complete Guide

You're an American planning a Rwanda trip and you want to rent a car. The question on your mind: will my US driver's license work in Rwanda, or do I need to get an International Driving Permit first?

The team at Rent Cars Kigali processes American drivers regularly. Here is the honest answer.

Does Rwanda Accept a US Driver's License?

Yes — Rwanda officially accepts a valid US driver's license for driving. Rwanda is not part of the Geneva Convention on Road Traffic (which governs IDPs) but accepts foreign licenses from recognized countries including the United States.

However — and this is important — we still strongly recommend getting an International Driving Permit (IDP) before you travel. Here is why.

Why You Should Still Get an IDP

  • Police checkpoints: Rwanda has routine police checkpoints on all major roads. Officers may not be familiar with every US state's license format. An IDP is a standardized document in multiple languages including French — much easier to verify quickly.
  • Rental company requirement: Some rental companies in Rwanda require an IDP for foreign drivers. We at Rent Cars Kigali accept a valid US license, but we still recommend the IDP as backup.
  • Accidents or incidents: If you are ever involved in an accident, having an IDP alongside your US license removes any ambiguity about your legal driving status.
  • Cost vs. benefit: An IDP costs $20 from AAA or AAMA in the US. For $20, you eliminate any possible complication.

How to Get an IDP Before Your Rwanda Trip

In the United States, IDPs are issued by two organizations:

  • AAA (American Automobile Association) — visit any AAA office with your valid US license, two passport photos, and $20. You leave with your IDP same day.
  • AAMA (American Automobile Touring Alliance) — same process, same cost.

You must be a US resident with a valid US license. IDPs are valid for one year from the date of issue.

Which Side of the Road Does Rwanda Drive On?

Rwanda drives on the right — exactly like the United States. No adjustment needed for American drivers. This is one reason Rwanda is particularly comfortable for Americans compared to countries like Kenya, Uganda, or South Africa where they drive on the left.

Road Signs — Will Americans Understand Them?

Rwanda uses international road signs (pictograms) similar to those used in Europe and internationally — most are self-explanatory. Text on signs is in English and Kinyarwanda. Speed limits are in km/h — remember to convert: 40 km/h ? 25 mph, 80 km/h ? 50 mph.

What American Drivers Love About Rwanda Roads

  • Driving on the right — same as home
  • Roads are remarkably well-maintained by African standards
  • Traffic laws are actually enforced — drivers generally behave
  • Google Maps works perfectly throughout Rwanda
  • Signage is in English

What to Watch Out For

  • Speed cameras: Rwanda has them on major routes — more than most Americans expect
  • Moto-taxis: Motorcycle taxis move very unpredictably — always check mirrors
  • Speed bumps: Many are unmarked or poorly marked — slow down in residential areas
  • 40 km/h in towns: Strictly enforced — slower than most Americans are used to in urban areas
