Akagera National Park -- The Complete 2026 Guide
Akagera is Rwanda's only savannah national park and one of Africa's most remarkable conservation success stories. Once heavily poached and diminished, it has been transformed over the past 15 years into a thriving Big Five ecosystem. Lions were reintroduced in 2015, black rhino in 2017, and the park now covers 1,122 km2 of savannah, woodland, and wetland along the Tanzania border.
The Animals of Akagera
- Lions: Reintroduced pride, steadily growing. Best spotted in the northern Mutumba Hills sector at dawn and dusk.
- Elephants: Large herds in the southern section. Often seen near water sources in the afternoon.
- Black Rhino: Rare sighting but possible. Track with rangers for best chance.
- Giraffes: Common throughout the park. Easily spotted from any game drive route.
- Hippos: Lake Ihema has one of Africa's highest hippo densities. Boat cruise gives best access.
- Buffalos, zebras, topis, impalas, waterbucks: Common throughout.
- Shoebill stork: One of Africa's most sought-after birds, in the southern wetlands. Very early morning only.
Park Entry Fees 2026
- Non-resident adult: $40/person/day
- Vehicle fee: $40/vehicle/day
- Night game drive: $35/person (book at gate)
- Boat cruise on Lake Ihema: $35/person (highly recommended)

Best Game Viewing Strategy
Be at the South Gate when it opens at 6:00 AM. Drive north immediately -- the Mutumba Hills sector 40 km inside the park offers the best lion sightings and is least visited in the early morning. Return south by 10 AM for the Lake Ihema boat cruise. Afternoon drive from 3:00 PM to 5:30 PM for elephant herds near the water. This pattern gives you the full Akagera experience in one day.
Where to Stay
- Akagera Game Lodge: Mid-range, inside the park, lake views. Most popular.
- Ruzizi Tented Lodge: Remote, authentic, excellent for atmosphere.
- Kamira Camp: Budget option inside the park boundaries.
