Self Drive Rwanda — Is It Worth It?
Every week we speak to visitors who arrive unsure whether to self-drive or hire a driver. After thousands of rentals across Rwanda, here is our honest answer: self-drive Rwanda is one of the most rewarding road experiences in Africa — for the right traveller.
Who Should Self-Drive Rwanda?
Self-drive is ideal if you:
- Have driven in a country that drives on the RIGHT side of the road
- Are comfortable with Google Maps navigation
- Want the freedom to stop, detour, and set your own pace
- Are travelling as a couple or small group (cost per person drops significantly)
- Have at least 3 days in Rwanda
Self-drive is NOT ideal if this is your very first time driving outside your home country. In that case, adding a professional driver for $20–$40/day is worth every cent.
Are Rwanda's Roads Good Enough to Self-Drive?
Yes — Rwanda has the best roads in East Africa for self-drivers:
- All main tourist routes are paved: Kigali–Musanze, Kigali–Akagera, Kigali–Gisenyi, Kigali–Huye/Nyungwe
- Roads are well-signposted and Google Maps works reliably on all major routes
- Traffic is orderly by African standards — Kigali is calmer than Nairobi or Kampala
- Police checkpoints are routine and stress-free (30–60 seconds, show your documents)
You need a 4x4 for: national park tracks, the Lake Burera/Ruhondo area, and mountain roads in wet season. A sedan is fine for Kigali city and main highways only. Browse our 4x4 fleet here.
What Licence Do You Need?
- Your home country driving licence — must be valid, held for 2+ years
- If not in English or French: carry an International Driving Permit (IDP)
- Minimum age: 23 years for most rental companies
