Rwanda 3 Day Itinerary — Make Every Hour Count
Three days in Rwanda is a tight window but it is workable — and for many visitors arriving on a connecting flight from Nairobi or Doha, it is the reality. The key is picking up a rental car at the airport and not wasting a single hour on shuttle schedules or taxi negotiations.
The Non-Negotiable for a 3-Day Rwanda Trip
Your gorilla permit must be on Day 2. That means arriving on Day 1 (any time), driving to Musanze that evening or early Day 2 morning, trekking on Day 2, and flying out on Day 3. There is no flexibility to move the gorilla day — the permit is date-specific.
Book your gorilla permit at rdb.rw before you book anything else. Then build the trip around that date.
Day 1: Arrive Kigali — Drive to Musanze
Arrive: Any time. Pick up rental car at KIA — free airport delivery with your flight number.
Option A (afternoon/evening arrival): Drive directly from the airport to Musanze (120 km, 2 hours). Arrive for dinner. Early bed. This is the most efficient option.
Option B (morning arrival): Half-day Kigali — Genocide Memorial (2 hours), lunch, then drive to Musanze in the afternoon. You can fit both.
? Recommended vehicle: Toyota RAV4 from $60/day. Handles the Kigali–Musanze road and park approach tracks.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking — Volcanoes National Park
Depart lodge by 6:00 AM. Briefing at 7:00 AM at park HQ (15 km from Musanze).
- Trek assigned gorilla family — 45 minutes to 6 hours depending on location
- One hour with the gorillas — the highlight of most people's entire Africa experience
- Return to lodge by early afternoon
Afternoon (Day 2): Drive back toward Kigali or continue to Lakes Burera/Ruhondo for 2 hours before driving back. Both are beautiful. Stay overnight in Kigali if Day 3 flight is morning.
Day 3: Kigali — Fly Home
Morning in Kigali before your flight.
- If morning flight: drive straight from Musanze to KGL (2 hours). Leave by 4 AM for a 7 AM flight.
- If afternoon/evening flight: morning Kigali — Inema Arts Centre, Kimironko Market, or a relaxed hotel breakfast. Return rental car to our office or we collect from your hotel.

What If You Cannot Get a Gorilla Permit?
Peak season permits sell out months ahead. If gorillas are not available for your dates, a 3-day Rwanda trip still works:
- Day 1: Kigali city tour
- Day 2: Akagera National Park — Big Five safari. 2.5 hours from Kigali. Book an Akagera 4x4 here.
- Day 3: Morning at Lake Muhazi or Kigali, fly home
A 3-day Rwanda trip without gorillas is still a genuinely excellent Africa experience.
