Rwanda 7 Day Itinerary — The Complete Road Trip (Gorillas, Safari, Lake Kivu)

Rwanda 7 Day Itinerary — The Best Way to See It All

Seven days is the ideal length for Rwanda. You can comfortably cover mountain gorillas, a Big Five safari, Rwanda's ancient rainforest, and the blue shores of Lake Kivu — all in one road trip, without rushing. This is the itinerary our most satisfied clients follow.

Pick up your 4x4 rental from Kigali airport on Day 1 and return it on Day 7. Estimated driving: 700 km total. Ideal vehicle: Toyota RAV4 2018+ or Land Cruiser Safari.

Day 1: Arrive Kigali

Drive: 0 km. Free airport car delivery to KGL arrivals. Kigali Genocide Memorial (essential). Kimironko Market. Dinner in Kigali.

Day 2: Kigali ? Musanze

Drive: 120 km north, 2 hours. Morning depart. Visit Rwanda's Iby'iwacu Cultural Village near Musanze. Afternoon: Twin Lakes Burera and Ruhondo. Early bed — gorilla trek tomorrow.

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking — Volcanoes National Park

Depart 6:00 AM. Briefing 7:00 AM. The centrepiece of any Rwanda trip. One hour with a mountain gorilla family. Return to lodge by early afternoon. Rest, recover, celebrate. Need a gorilla trekking vehicle with a driver? We can provide both.

Day 4: Musanze ? Akagera National Park

Drive: 200 km via Kigali, 3.5 hours. Cross Rwanda east to the savannah. Check in. Afternoon game drive — elephants, hippos, giraffes. Evening at the lodge watching the lake.

Day 5: Full Day Akagera Safari

Drive: Within the park. Dawn game drive (lions are most active 6–9 AM). Lake Ihema boat cruise for hippos and Shoebill stork (one of Africa's most sought-after birds). Afternoon big mammal drive. Book your Akagera safari 4x4 here.

Day 6: Akagera ? Nyungwe Forest (via Kigali)

Drive: 310 km, 5 hours. Long but rewarding drive across Rwanda's full width. Stop in Kigali for lunch and resupply. Arrive Nyungwe late afternoon — the shift in landscape from savannah to ancient rainforest is dramatic.

Day 7: Nyungwe Forest ? Kigali — Return

Morning: Canopy Walk ($60/person) — 160m suspension bridge, 50m above the forest floor. One of Rwanda's most surreal experiences. Then drive 225 km back to Kigali. Return your vehicle at our office or the airport. We collect from any Kigali hotel free of charge.
