Nyungwe Forest National Park -- Complete Visitor Guide 2026

Nyungwe Forest National Park -- The Complete 2026 Visitor Guide

Nyungwe Forest is one of Africa's oldest and most biodiverse rainforests -- an ancient ecosystem covering 1,019 km2 of Rwanda's southwestern highlands. It is home to 13 primate species including chimpanzees and the spectacular Angolan colobus monkey, plus over 300 bird species. For visitors who have done gorilla trekking in the north, Nyungwe offers a completely different but equally extraordinary wildlife experience.

Top Experiences at Nyungwe

Canopy Walkway -- $60 per person

A 160-metre suspension bridge 50 metres above the forest floor. Looking down into the ancient canopy from this height is genuinely vertiginous. The walk takes about 2 hours including the trail to reach it. Book at the park entrance or through rdb.rw. No gorilla permit required -- this is the most accessible major experience in Nyungwe.

Chimpanzee Trekking -- $90 per person

Track habituated chimpanzee groups through the forest. Unlike gorillas, chimps move fast -- tracking them is wilder and more unpredictable. Briefing at 5:30 AM, depart by 6:00 AM. Groups limited to 8 people per chimp community. Book through rdb.rw at least 2 weeks in advance.

Colobus Monkey Walk -- $50 per person

Rwanda's largest monkey troops -- black and white Angolan colobus. Groups of 300+ animals have been recorded in Nyungwe. An extraordinary spectacle when you encounter a large troop moving through the canopy. More accessible than chimpanzee trekking and highly recommended.

Waterfall Trail

A 10 km return hike to a beautiful forest waterfall. Free with park entry. One of the best hikes in Rwanda.
