Hiking Mount Bisoke Rwanda -- Can You Climb the Volcano?

Hiking Mount Bisoke -- Rwanda's Most Accessible Volcano

Volcanoes National Park is known for gorillas, but its mountains are also serious hiking destinations. Mount Bisoke (3,711m) has a stunning crater lake at its summit and is the most popular volcano hike in Rwanda -- accessible in a full day without specialist climbing skills. If you have already done gorilla trekking and want another reason to be in Musanze for an extra day, Bisoke is it.

The Hike -- What to Expect

  • Distance: Approximately 9 km return from the trailhead
  • Elevation gain: 1,000+ metres
  • Duration: 5 to 8 hours return depending on fitness and conditions
  • Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous. No technical climbing required but steep, muddy trails in the upper section. Good physical fitness needed.
  • Summit: A volcanic crater lake -- Lake Ngezi -- filled with water and surrounded by the rim of the extinct volcano
  • Wildlife en route: Buffalo, forest elephants, and various primates use the same forest -- you will be with armed rangers

Permits and Booking

  • Permit cost: $75 per person -- book through rdb.rw or directly at Volcanoes NP headquarters
  • Briefing time: 7:00 AM at park HQ in Kinigi, same as gorilla trekking
  • Group size: Maximum 8 people per group
  • Guide: Mandatory armed ranger guide included in the permit

What to Bring

  • Waterproof hiking boots with ankle support -- essential, the upper trail is very muddy
  • Waterproof jacket and warm layer -- temperature drops significantly above 3,000m and clouds can close in fast
  • Hiking poles -- strongly recommended for the steep muddy descent
  • 2 litres of water minimum
  • Packed lunch and snacks -- the hike is 5-8 hours
  • Camera with good strap -- you will want both hands free on the upper section

Best Time to Hike Bisoke

Dry season (June-September, December-February) gives the best summit views and driest trail conditions. The wet season hike is still possible but much muddier and the summit is often in cloud. June-September gives the highest chance of a clear crater lake view.

Getting to the Trailhead

The trailhead is 15 km from Musanze town, accessible via the same road to park headquarters. You need your own transport -- no public vehicles reach the trailhead. Our Musanze vehicle rentals serve the Bisoke trailhead as well as gorilla trekking.
