Congo Nile Trail Rwanda -- Hiking and Cycling Lake Kivu Shore Guide

Congo Nile Trail -- Rwanda's Greatest Long-Distance Route

The Congo Nile Trail stretches 227 km along the Rwanda shore of Lake Kivu from Rubavu in the north to Rusizi in the south. It follows footpaths, dirt tracks, and ridge routes through fishing villages, tea plantations, and some of the most beautiful scenery in Africa. The trail is primarily designed for hikers and cyclists, and completing it in full takes 7-10 days.

Trail Overview

  • Total distance: 227 km one-way (Rubavu to Rusizi or reverse)
  • Terrain: Mix of dirt tracks, footpaths, and rural roads. Mostly undulating with some steep sections.
  • Hiking time: 10-14 days for the full trail
  • Cycling time: 7-10 days for the full trail
  • Difficulty: Moderate -- no technical sections but cumulative distance is significant. Good fitness required.
  • Accommodation: Simple guesthouses and community lodges available every 15-25 km along the route

Doing Sections of the Trail

Most visitors do not complete the full 227 km trail. Doing a 1-3 day section from a base at Rubavu or Karongi gives the best of the trail experience without a 10-day commitment:

  • Rubavu to Gisenyi section (2-3 hours hiking): Northern lake shore, fishing villages, Congo views
  • Karongi (Kibuye) area (half-day loop): Peninsulas and island views, accessible from any Karongi accommodation
  • Nyamyumba section (full day): Hot springs, remote villages, spectacular ridge views

Cycling the Congo Nile Trail

Cycling is the most popular way to do the trail. Mountain bikes can be hired in Rubavu from several operators. The route is technically accessible by hardtail but a full-suspension mountain bike is more comfortable on the rougher sections. Many cyclists transport their bikes from Kigali in a rental vehicle.

How a Rental Car Supports the Trail

Even committed trail users benefit from a support vehicle. For a section hike or cycling trip:

  • Drive to the start point, hike or cycle the section, car meets you at the end
  • Transport luggage between overnight stops so you walk with a light daypack
  • Support a cycling group with supplies, spare equipment, and emergency evacuation capability

Our vehicles are available for trail support with or without a driver. A 4x4 is recommended for the dirt tracks alongside the trail route. WhatsApp us your trail plan: +250 788 362 035
