Fuel Prices in Rwanda 2026 — Where to Fill Up and What It Costs

Fuel Prices in Rwanda 2026: The Honest Guide

Before any Rwanda road trip, two fuel questions matter: how much will it cost, and will you be able to find a station when you need one? Here are the honest answers.

Current Fuel Prices in Rwanda (2026)

Rwanda regulates fuel prices centrally — they are the same at every station nationwide. As of early 2026, approximate prices are:

  • Petrol (Essence): approximately 2930 - 3000 RWF per litre (~$2.1–$2.5 USD)
  • Diesel (Gazole): approximately 2300–2500 RWF per litre (~$1.90–$2 USD)

Note: Prices are adjusted monthly by the government. Check the RURA (Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority) website for the current regulated price before your trip.

What Fuel Does Your Rental Car Use?

  • Toyota RAV4 (most models): Petrol
  • Toyota Land Cruiser V8, Prado, Fortuner: Diesel — confirm with your rental company
  • Hyundai Tucson: Petrol
  • Kia Sorento: Diesel or Petrol depending on year — confirm before filling up

Never put the wrong fuel in a diesel 4x4. If in doubt, ask the attendant to double-check your fuel cap label before they pump. Always confirm your fuel type with our team when booking.

Fuel Station Coverage on Main Routes

Kigali ? Musanze (Volcanoes NP): Total and Rubis stations in Musanze town. Fill up in Kigali before leaving — you will pass through smaller towns but stations can be closed early morning (5 AM departure).
Kigali ? Akagera: Last reliable station is in Kayonza town, about 30 km before the park gate. Fill up there.
Kigali ? Nyungwe: Muhanga (Gitarama) has stations. Fill up again in Huye (Butare) — the last town before the park and Lake Kivu.
Kigali ? Gisenyi/Rubavu: Stations available in Musanze. Multiple stations in Rubavu town itself.

How Much Will Fuel Cost for Your Whole Trip?

A rough calculation for common trips from Kigali (based on a Toyota RAV4 at ~10L/100km):

  • Kigali ? Volcanoes NP and back: 240 km = ~24L = ~35,000 RWF (~$32)
  • Kigali ? Akagera and back: 230 km = ~23L = ~34,000 RWF (~$31)
  • Kigali ? Lake Kivu (Gisenyi) and back: 320 km = ~32L = ~46,000 RWF (~$42)
  • 7-day full Rwanda circuit: ~600–800 km = ~70L = ~100,000 RWF (~$90)

Land Cruisers and large 4x4s consume more — roughly 12–15L/100km.

Paying for Fuel

All major stations accept cash (RWF). Card acceptance is improving — Total stations in Kigali and major towns generally accept Visa. In rural areas, carry enough cash. Mobile money (MoMo) is not yet widely accepted at fuel stations.

Our rental team briefs every client on the fuel type, nearest stations on their route, and how much to budget before they leave Kigali. Book your rental here and we include a full route fuel briefing.
