Cycling in Rwanda -- The Complete 2026 Guide

Rwanda has become one of Africa's most exciting cycling destinations. It is not easy -- the thousand hills are real -- but the scenery is extraordinary, the roads are well-maintained, and the cycling infrastructure has improved significantly with Rwanda's growing international cycling profile. Team Africa Rising and the Tour du Rwanda have put Rwandan cycling on the world map.

Road Cycling -- Main Routes

Kigali to Musanze (120 km)

A serious road cycling day -- 120 km with significant climbing through the northern highlands. The main RN2 highway is paved and relatively safe for cyclists. Not for beginners but a classic route for experienced riders. Allow 6-8 hours.

Lake Kivu Shore Road

The roads along the Lake Kivu shore are some of the most beautiful cycling in Africa. Moderate gradients, stunning lake views, low traffic outside town centres. Can be done in sections -- the stretch between Rubavu and Karongi (central shore) is particularly scenic.

Congo Nile Trail

227 km of mixed terrain from Rubavu to Rusizi. Mountain bike required. 7-10 days for the full route. Can be done in day sections from a base. The most celebrated cycling route in Rwanda. See our full Congo Nile Trail guide.

Where to Rent a Bicycle in Kigali

  • Several operators near Rubavu rent mountain bikes for Congo Nile Trail sections
  • Kigali has limited dedicated bike rental -- ask at your hotel for current recommended operators
  • Bring your own bike from home if cycling is your primary activity -- transport it in a rental car if needed

How Hard Is Cycling in Rwanda?

Hard. Rwanda is genuinely hilly -- the thousand hills are not a marketing term. Kigali itself sits at 1,567m with dramatic gradients between neighbourhoods. Expect significant climbing on any route outside the flat eastern plains near Akagera. Experienced cyclists find it challenging and rewarding. Beginners will struggle.

The Support Car Option

Many cycling visitors hire a support vehicle alongside their ride -- for luggage transport, mechanical support, and the ability to load the bikes if conditions become unsafe. A Toyota RAV4 with the rear seats down fits two road bikes comfortably. We regularly provide support vehicles for cycling groups and individuals.
