Internet in Rwanda — The Honest Picture
Mobile Data Coverage
MTN Rwanda and Airtel Rwanda both offer 4G LTE coverage across Kigali and all major towns. Signal is reliable on all main tourist routes:
- Kigali: Excellent 4G everywhere
- Kigali to Musanze highway: Good 4G, occasional 3G on mountain sections
- Musanze town: Good 4G
- Kigali to Akagera: Good on the main road, drops inside the park
- Kigali to Rubavu (Lake Kivu): Good on the highway, spotty in deep valleys
- Nyungwe Forest: Weak to no signal inside the forest — download offline maps before entering
- Inside national parks: Unreliable — do not count on data inside Akagera or Volcanoes NP
Wi-Fi
Free Wi-Fi is available at most Kigali hotels, cafes, and restaurants. Quality varies — Bourbon Coffee and Java House have reliable fast Wi-Fi. Outside Kigali, guesthouses often have Wi-Fi but speeds can be slow.

How to Get Mobile Data in Rwanda
Option 1: Buy a Local SIM at the Airport (Recommended)
MTN and Airtel SIM cards are available at kiosks in the KGL arrivals hall. Cost: ~1,000 RWF for the SIM. Data bundles: 1GB for ~1,000 RWF, 5GB for ~3,500 RWF. This is by far the cheapest way to stay connected.
You need your passport to register the SIM — it is a legal requirement in Rwanda. The process takes about 5 minutes.
Option 2: International Roaming
Works but is expensive. Check your carrier's Rwanda roaming rates before you travel — some charge $10–$15 per day for data. A local SIM pays for itself within hours.
Option 3: Portable Wi-Fi / MiFi Device
Available for rent at some Kigali phone shops. Useful if you have multiple devices and do not want to buy SIMs for each. Ask at any MTN shop in Kigali.
