Transport is one of the first practical challenges every arriving staff member faces. Here is the complete guide.
Your First Week -- Immediate Options
Before your organisational vehicle is sorted:

Long-Term Transport for International Staff
Option 1: Organisational Fleet Vehicle
Most large UN agencies and international NGOs maintain a Kigali fleet of vehicles assigned to departments or senior staff. If your organisation has this -- your admin team will arrange it. This guide covers the period before that is sorted, or for staff whose organisations do not maintain a fleet.
Option 2: Monthly Car Rental (Most Flexible)
For postings of 3-24 months, monthly rental is the most practical solution for most international staff. From $900/month for a Toyota Vitz to $1,800+/month for a Land Cruiser Prado. All inclusive: insurance, maintenance, 24/7 support. We provide monthly invoices for organisational accounts.
Option 3: Buying Locally

Field Trips Outside Kigali
Many international organisations conduct field work across Rwanda -- community programmes, monitoring visits, research trips. Our vehicles are regularly hired for field trips to all districts:
- Eastern Province (Akagera, Kayonza, Kirehe): RAV4 or Land Cruiser
- Northern Province (Musanze, Burera, Gicumbi): RAV4 minimum, Land Cruiser for wet season
- Southern Province (Huye, Nyamagabe, Rusizi): RAV4 or Land Cruiser for Nyungwe-area work
- Western Province (Rubavu, Karongi, Rutsiro): RAV4 sufficient for main routes
- Cross-border field work (Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi): cross-border permits arranged by us
