Rwanda sits just south of the equator and its weather surprises most visitors — it is not the hot, flat, dusty Africa many expect. Understanding Rwanda's climate is essential for planning both your trip and choosing the right vehicle for conditions you will encounter on the road.
Here is the complete month-by-month guide from Rent Cars Kigali.
Rwanda's Two Seasons
Rwanda has a modified equatorial climate with two rainy seasons and two dry seasons — not the simple "dry" and "wet" binary that some other African countries have.
Month-by-Month Rwanda Weather Guide
January — Short Dry Season
Generally dry, warm, and sunny. One of the best months to visit. Roads are excellent, national parks are accessible. Kigali temperatures: 18–27°C.
February — Short Dry Season
Similar to January. Peak conditions for wildlife viewing in Akagera. Gorilla trekking excellent.
March — Start of Long Rains
Rain begins increasing mid-month. Landscapes start turning lush and green. Roads remain good on main highways. Start upgrading to a RAV4 for national park visits.
April — Long Rainy Season (Peak)
Heaviest rainfall of the year. Beautiful green scenery. Fewer tourists mean lower prices and more permit availability. Off-road driving requires a 4x4 — Land Cruiser recommended for national park tracks.
May — Long Rainy Season
Still rainy but beginning to ease late in the month. Gorilla trekking permits often available at shorter notice. Road conditions can be challenging in parks.
June — Start of Long Dry Season
Rwanda's tourism season begins. Rain stops, roads dry out, wildlife concentrates near water in Akagera. Perfect travel conditions begin.
July — Peak Season
Rwanda's best month for weather. Dry, clear, warm days. All national parks accessible. Book car rental and gorilla permits well in advance — this is the busiest month.
August — Peak Season
Identical to July. Excellent across all destinations. RAV4 handles everything in these conditions.
September — Late Dry Season
Still dry and excellent. Slightly less busy than July-August. Good availability.
October — Short Rains Begin
Short rainy season starts. Short showers, usually afternoon. Landscape greens up. Roads generally fine. Good for photography — dramatic clouds and lush vegetation.
November — Short Rainy Season
More consistent rain. Plan outdoor activities for mornings. Upgrade to RAV4 2009+ for national park visits.
December — Short Dry Season Returns
Rain eases. Good conditions return. Christmas and New Year period is busy — book everything early.
