1. Kigali Genocide Memorial
The most important site in Rwanda. The memorial documents the 1994 genocide and is a deeply moving and essential visit. Located in Gisozi, about 5 km from the city centre. With a car, you can arrive at opening time (8 AM) before tour groups arrive and leave when you are emotionally ready — not when a bus schedule says so. Free entry.
2. Kimironko Market
The largest and most authentic market in Kigali. Fabric, food, crafts, and the real pulse of the city. Parking nearby is easy with a car; otherwise you are navigating moto-taxis with bags of purchases. Go on a Saturday morning for the busiest and most vibrant atmosphere.
3. Inema Arts Center
A world-class contemporary art gallery in Remera. Local and international artists. Free entry. The gallery café is excellent for lunch. With a car, pair this with the Ivuka Arts Centre nearby for a full afternoon of Kigali's thriving art scene.
4. Kigali Convention Centre
The iconic dome is one of Africa's most distinctive buildings. Worth driving past at dusk when it is lit up, and the surrounding Kigali City Tower area has great restaurants for dinner. No entry required — just drive the perimeter and walk the plaza.
5. Nyamirambo Neighbourhood Walking Tour
Nyamirambo is Kigali's most authentic and vibrant neighbourhood — mosques, street food, local bars. Drive there and then walk. The Women's Cooperative run walking tours that are some of the best cultural experiences in the city ($15/person).
6. Lake Muhazi Day Trip
Only 45 minutes from Kigali, Lake Muhazi is a long, quiet lake perfect for a half-day escape. Hire kayaks, eat fresh tilapia, watch the fishermen. Almost impossible without a car — no reliable public transport. A perfect add-on to a morning in the city.
7. Kandt House Museum (Museum of Natural History)
The former residence of Richard Kandt, the German founder of Kigali. Small but fascinating, covering Rwanda's colonial history and natural heritage. Located in Nyarugenge — easy to combine with Nyamirambo in one afternoon loop.
8. Rebero Hill Viewpoint
One of Kigali's highest points. Drive up for a panoramic view over the city's extraordinary hills. Especially good at golden hour. Free, accessible by car, and genuinely impressive — Kigali's topography has to be seen to be believed.
9. Kigali City Market (Nouveau Marché)
The organised, covered city market near the bus terminal. Better for spices, local produce, and imigongo art (Rwanda's famous geometric cow-dung art, now produced in acrylic). Worth an hour before a drive to the eastern province.
10. Norrsken House Kigali
Africa's largest startup hub — a remarkable building and a sign of how fast Rwanda is changing. The rooftop café is open to the public and one of the best spots in Kigali for a coffee with a view. Great to combine with the Convention Centre area.
How to Do Kigali Efficiently by Car
A well-planned Kigali day covers sites 1, 7, and 5 in the morning (all in the west/southwest), then 3, 4, and 10 in the afternoon (all in the northeast/city centre). Finish with sundowners at Rebero Hill. Total driving: under 25 km. That is a rich day you simply cannot replicate by moto or Uber.
