August is Rwanda's busiest month. The dry season is in full swing, school holidays in Europe and North America align, and gorilla trekking conditions are at their best. If you are planning an August trip, here is everything you need to know -- including how far ahead to book everything.
August Weather
- Consistently dry and sunny throughout the country
- Kigali: 18-25 degrees. Clear skies.
- Volcanoes NP: 12-20 degrees during trekking. Crisp mornings, clear views of the volcanoes.
- Akagera: warm and dry, 25-32 degrees. Best dry season game viewing.
- Lake Kivu: warm and calm. Perfect for all water activities.
Gorilla Trekking in August -- What You Need to Know
August gorilla permits are the most sought-after in Rwanda. Key facts:
- Book permits 6 months ahead minimum. August dates on rdb.rw sell out as early as February. If your August trip is confirmed, book your permit immediately.
- Permit availability: 96 permits per day (12 families x 8 people). August regularly has full days weeks in advance.
- Forest conditions: Excellent. Dry trails, clear weather, the best photography conditions of the year.
- Gorilla behaviour: Families are active in higher forest sections in August -- sometimes a longer trek to reach them, but in better light and clearer conditions.
August Kwita Izina Connection
The Kwita Izina gorilla naming ceremony is held in September but August sees a significant build-up of visitors preparing for or extending through the September event. Many visitors combine an August gorilla trek with attendance at Kwita Izina in early September. See our Kwita Izina guide.

August Pricing
August is peak pricing for Rwanda lodges. Expect 20-30% higher rates than shoulder season at premium lodges. Mid-range and budget accommodation increases less dramatically. Car rental rates remain standard -- we do not apply peak season surcharges.
